The passport issued is a passport biometric.

It must be removed in the 3 months. After this period, the passport is destroyed.

You must personally withdraw it at the place of deposit of the file and sign it on the spot.

The passport is valid 10 years.

The old passport must be returned. If it included a visa, it may be retained for the duration of the validity of the visa.

You can apply to renew your passport without moving at the embassy or consulate if you meet all of the following conditions :

  • You always have your passport (it has not been lost or stolen)
  • You were at least 18 years of age on the date of issue of your passport current
  • Your passport is still valid or has expired for less than 5 years
  • You don't ask not renewing your passport to do change your birth name or your first name or your sex
  • You don't ask not a second passport (for incompatible business reasons or destinations)
  • You are registered at Register of French nationals established outside France and have in your possession consular registration number (Numic) and your e-mail address in the Register
  • You have a digital identity France Identity certified or a digital identity La PosteDigital Identity La Poste.

1Know if you need to buy an electronic stamp

In most cases, especially if your passport has expired or is soon to expire, you must provide a electronic stamp “Français de l'foreigner” of an amount of €96. You must buy this stamp on the internet:

In this case, your passport will be valid 10 years from its issuance.

Warning  

You don't have to buy an electronic stamp if you are in one of the following situations and if you agree that the new passport keeps the same expiration date as the old one :

  • There are only one or two empty pages left on your current passport
  • You change your usual name (for example, spouse's name)
  • You changed your address
  • You renew your passport to correct an error made by the administration.

2Prepare the documents and information needed to make the pre-application online

Mandatory documents to be provided

You must provide the following items :

  • Your consular registration number (Numic) to the Register of French nationals established outside France
  • The e-mail address communicated to the Register of French nationals established outside France
  • One photo id to french standards and less than 6 months of age
  • A copy of your current passport (double page where are your photo ID and your signature)
  • The number of the electronic stamp you purchased
  • One proof of address from less than 3 months.
Additional documents to provide depending on your situation

According to the pattern for passport renewal, you must provide:

  • A sworn statement in which you present the administration's error in order to have your passport corrected (a attestation template is available)
  • Copy all pages of the passport into a single file to prove that you have exhausted all its pages and request free renewal before its expiry date

4Receive the consulate's response to your pre-request

You get a response by email to the address you declared when registering in the French Abroad Register.

The email presents the list of documents that you must mail to the consulate, the postal address from the consulate, as well as the information that you will need to have a remote videoconferencing with a consular officer.

5Buy 2 pre-paid envelopes and send documents by post

Envelopes

You have to buy 2 pre-paid envelopes with a private carrier.

You must consult your consulate's website to find out the carrier and the type of envelope to buy.

You must:

  • Send one of the envelopes to the consulate with your documents (the consulate will use it to send you your new passport)

6Be invited to choose the appointment by videoconference with a consular officer

Once the consulate has received and verified your mail, you will be contacted by email for the scheduling an appointment.

The email will invite you to connect to your personal area Public Service. You will have access to a link in which you can choose the day and time slot for the appointment.

The appointment will take place videoconferencing.

Contact the consulate by e-mail indicating your surname, first names and date of birth.

7Participate in the videoconference with the consular officer

During the interview, the consular officer check your file with you.

You will need to present your passport to the agent.

The duration of the maintenance is estimated at about 20 minutes.

8Receive the receipt from the consulate

Following the videoconference appointment, the consulate will send you a receipt in your personal area Public Service. You are notified by email and must download the document entitled Receipt of your passport application in your personal area Public Service.

The deadline for receipt depends on the location and period of your request.

If the consulate accepts the passport application, your passport will be manufactured and then sent to you.

While waiting for the receipt of the passport, you can follow its manufacture and sending. You must go to the website of theANTS: titleContent and enter and then validate the application number on the receipt:

9Receive the passport

You will receive your new passport in a secure envelope (in the envelope you purchased and sent with your documents). The passport is delivered to you by hand.

Check with the carrier. He will tell you the procedure to follow (2nd pass, withdrawal in a post office…).

10Activate your new passport

In a maximum 40 days after receiving your passport, you must log in to the ANTS website:

You must enter the security number which is indicated on the receipt that you have downloaded your Public Service personal area.

Send the old passport by post within 40 days (unless you keep it, as it contains a still valid visa)

You have to buy a pre-paid envelope (identical to those used when sending your documents to the consulate).

In a maximum 40 days after receiving your new passport, you must place your old passport in the envelope and send it to your consulate.

Warning  

If the consulate has not received your old passport within this period, your new passport will be deactivated. You won't be able to use it.

If you request the sending by post, you must provide at the time of filing the file, in addition to the necessary supporting documents, a postage-paid envelope purchased from the authorized service provider in the country. Inquiries must be made with the consulate to determine the authorized service provider, the size of the envelope to be provided and the postage required.

If you do not indicate anything at the time of filing, you will have to withdraw the passport instead of filing the file.

If you prefer to withdraw it from a authorized honorary consul, this must be indicated at the counter when the application is submitted.
