You have lost your passport and you want a new one? We present you step by step the process to follow. It differs depending on whether the loss occurred in France or abroad.

If you do not wish to redo your passport immediately, you must declare the loss to the police or gendarmerie authorities. If the loss occurred abroad, you must contact the local police authorities and the French embassy or consulate.

In France

Step-by-step approach

The location of the request does not depend on your domicile. You can surrender in any town hall, provided that it is equipped with a recording station.

You have to buy a fiscal stamp of an amount of €86 (€43 in Guyana).

You have 2 possibilities : either buy the stamp on the internet, or buy it in a tobacco shop.

You can buy a tax stamp in a tobacco office if it is equipped with the application Authorized point of sale.

You have to present the documents originals.

The documents to be provided vary depending on whether you have an identity card or not:

You have a valid identity card

You must submit the following documents:

  • Your identity card
  • 1 photo ID less than 6 months and conforms to standards
  • 1 proof of address of less than 1 year
  • Declaration of loss to be completed on site or using the form cerfa n°14011 to be completed, signed and printed
  • Tax stamp (unless you have already purchased it during pre-application)
  • If you have made a pre-application, the pre-application number and/or QR code obtained at the end of the process (it is advisable to print the pre-application summary).

You have an expired ID card

The situation varies depending on the expiry date of your identity card:

Expiry date: less than 5 years

You must submit the following documents:

  • Your identity card
  • 1 photo ID less than 6 months and conforms to standards
  • 1 proof of address of less than 1 year
  • Declaration of loss to be completed on site or using the form cerfa n°14011 to be completed, signed and printed
  • Tax stamp (unless you have already purchased it during pre-application)
  • If you have made a pre-application, the pre-application number and/or QR code obtained at the end of the process (it is advisable to print the pre-application summary).

To use a usage name that is not yet on an identity document, other documents must be provided depending on the nature of that second name: name of spouse or name of other parent.

Your presence is essential to proceed with fingerprinting.

You have to come with all the necessary documents.

The passport is not manufactured on site and therefore cannot be issued immediately.

The manufacturing time depends on the location and period of the request. It takes several weeks and, as the summer holidays approach, delays can extend.

Track the status of a passport application

If you provided a mobile phone number during your application, you will receive an SMS when the passport is available.

The passport issued is a passport biometric.

It must be removed in the 3 months. After this period, the passport is destroyed.

You must personally withdraw it at the place of filing of the file and sign it on site.

The passport is valid 10 years.

Decide how to withdraw the passport

The method of withdrawal varies depending on the country from which the passport renewal application is made:

In the European Union, Norway, the United Kingdom or Switzerland

You can request that the passport be sent to you by mail. But you have to be registered at register of foreigners from the same country, have an email address and be able to transmit files via the internet.

If you request the sending by post, you must provide at the time of filing the file, in addition to the necessary supporting documents, a postage-paid envelope purchased from the authorized service provider in the country. Inquiries must be made with the consulate to determine the authorized service provider, the size of the envelope to be provided and the postage required.

If you do not indicate anything at the time of filing, you will have to withdraw the passport instead of filing the file.

If you prefer to withdraw it from a authorized honorary consul, this must be indicated at the counter when the application is submitted.

Elsewhere in the world

In some countries, you can request that the passport be sent to you by post. But you have to be registered at register of foreigners from the same country, have an email address and be able to transmit files via the internet.

In this case, at the time of submission of the application, a postage-paid envelope purchased from the authorized service provider in the country must be provided in addition to the necessary supporting documents. Inquiries must be made with the consulate to determine the authorized service provider, the size of the envelope to be provided and the postage required.

You can also adjust directly in cash at the consulate. Some consulates also accept payment by credit card, check or bank transfer. Visit the consulate's website to find out how to pay.

At the time of filing the file, if you have requested to receive the passport by mail, you will receive an email notification of dispatch in which a secret code appears.
