You want to drive a large engine capacity of more than 35 kilowatts (47.5 horsepower) and you wonder how to pass the motorcycle A license ? We present you the information to know and the steps of the process.

Step-by-step approach

License A allows the following vehicles to be driven:

  • Motorcycle, with or without sidecar, whatever its power
  • 3-wheel motor vehicle of a power greater than 15 : titleContent.

Age

To get the permit A, you must have at least :

  • 20 years for driving a motorcycle with a power exceeding 35 : titleContent (47.5 ch: titleContent)
  • 21 years for driving a 3-wheeler with a power exceeding 15 : titleContent.

Prior motorcycle license

You must have the A2 motorcycle license for 2 years or more.

Deadline

You can take the training within 3 months before the anniversary date of the 2 years of obtaining the A2 motorcycle license.

For example, if you had the A2 license on the 1ster august 2025, you can take the training from 1er May 2027.

Registration

You can take the training in a driving school (motorcycle school) or a accredited associative school.

The driving school must offer you a standard contract for driving education. This contract specifies in particular the program and the course of the training, the price training and administrative services, obligations of each, the means of payment.

The rates of the training are free.

Duration

The training lasts 7 hours and is done over a day.

Content

The training consists of 3 sequences:

  • Theory (2 hours). The following topics are discussed: accident, speed, detectability, driving and psychoactive products (alcohol, drugs, drugs, etc.)
  • Non-traffic handling (2 hours) on tray
  • Driving and training assessment (3 hours).

End of training

At the end of the training, the trainer will give you a follow-up certificate. There's no exam to take.

Warning  

The certificate of follow-up does not allow driving a motorcycle or 3-wheel motor vehicle falling within category A of the license. You must wait to receive the email or SMS of France Securities - ANTS: titleContent informing that your permit application has been validated. Then you can download a secure certificate of rights to drive (ADCS).

The school takes care of the request of your A license.

You must provide the following documents:

  • If you are a foreigner, proof of regularity of stay or, if you are exempt from a residence permit, proof of your presence in France for at least 6 months (payroll, rent receipt, etc.).

Shipment of driver's license

The driver's license (driving license) is shipped by letter followed. This allows you to track and trace the steps of its routing, from shipment to deposit in the mailbox.

Upon receipt of the email or SMS informing that your application for a motorcycle A license has been validated, you can download a secure certificate of rights to drive (ADCS).

The ADCS will help you is suitable for driving a category A 2- or 3-wheel vehicle pending receipt of permit A. ADCS is valid for 4 months from the date of its issue and may be reissued if necessary. It is valid only in France.
