Driver's license application: what credentials are accepted?

Anyone requesting a registration a class of driving license, the delivery or the renewal of a driver's license, shall prove his identity.

As these steps are done online on the site de France Titres - ANTS, the supporting documents must be in digital format. However, you must be able to present the original of each of the supporting documents provided.

Accepted credentials vary according to your nationality.

You have French nationality

The following credentials are accepted for adults and minors:

  • National ID card secured, valid or expired for less than 5 years
  • Passport, service passport or mission passport, valid or expired for less than 5 years
  • Single-use proof of identity with photo of France Identity
  • Receipt as proof of identity if you are the subject of a exit ban
  • If you are detained, driver's license candidate at a exit permission or in sentencing arrangementreceipt, which is proof of identity.

The end of validity of an expired proof is assessed on the date of filing the application online on the site de France Titres - ANTS.

Please note

During the theoretical (code) and practical tests of the driving license, in addition to these proof of identity, the driving license in bank card format, or digital identity France identity upon presentation of the smartphone, are also accepted.

You have Icelandic, Liechtenstein, Monegasque, Norwegian, San Marino or Swiss nationality

The following credentials, valid, are accepted for adults and minors:

  • National Foreign Identity Card
  • Foreigner Passport
  • If you are a military member serving as a foreigner, military card
  • If you are detained, driver's license candidate at a exit permission or in sentencing arrangementreceipt, which is proof of identity.

Please note

During the theoretical (code) and practical tests of the driving license, in addition to these credentials, the driving license in bank card format is also accepted.

You have the nationality of a European Union country

European Union countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.

For a major

The following credentials, valid, are accepted for an adult:

  • Passport
  • Document or secure residence permit issued by the French administration and proving a right to stay in France
  • If you are a military member serving as a foreigner, military card
  • If you are detained, driver's license candidate at a exit permission or in sentencing arrangementreceipt, which is proof of identity.

Please note

These credentials are also accepted during the theoretical (code) and practical tests of the driving license.

For a minor

The following credentials, valid, are accepted for a minor:

  • Passport
  • Document or secure residence permit, valid, issued by the French administration and proving a right to stay in France 
  • Movement document for a minor foreigner (DCEM)
  • Republican Identity Document (TIR)
  • Receipt for recognition of international protection given to the alien granting him refugee status, statelessness or subsidiary protection
  • Refugee travel document
  • Identity and travel document
  • Parents' passport if the minor is included with a similar photo.

Please note

These credentials are also accepted during the theoretical (code) and practical tests of the driving license.
