These rights are open from 1er April of the year you received the energy check until April 30 of the following year.

      Unpaid invoices

During the winter truce (from 1er November to March 31), your electrical power is maintained, even if you have unpaid bills. Outside of the winter break, you are entitled to a minimum power supply of 1 kVA (kilovoltampere) for 60 days, even in case of unpaid.

In addition, the intervention costs associated with an unpaid payment (such as a power reduction or a power suspension) are reduced.

Finally, you are exempt from the fees in case of payment rejection (for example, if your direct debit fails).

      Moving

You are exempt from paying the cost of commissioning electricity or gas in your new home.

      Tracking your consumption

Your supplier offers you an offer allowing the precise and refined transmission of your electricity and gas consumption. This helps you track your consumption more easily and can help you save energy.

To benefit from the energy check, one of the members of your tax home must have signed an electricity contract.

In addition, your tax household must have a reference tax income (RFR) less than €11,000 per consumption unit (UC) on the tax assessment for year N-2 (2023 for the energy check issued in 2025).

The CPU corresponds to the composition of your household. It is calculated as follows:

      • The 1er registrant (or the sole registrant if there is only one) for 1 CPU.
      • The 2nd declarant (if any) for account 0.5 CPU. If there are no 2nd declarant, it's 1re person dependent or attached to the tax household who takes this place and then counts for 0.5 UC.
      • Each of the other persons connected to the tax household counts for 0.3 CPU.

The values of 0.5 CPU and 0.3 CPU are divided by 2 if they concern minor children living in alternating residence with each of the 2 parents.

To determine your entitlement to the energy check, you must:

      • Know the composition of your tax home expressed in CPU
      • View your RFR of the year N-2
      • And divide this RFR by your number of UCs. This result determines whether your RFR is below the threshold of €11,000 by UC. Thus, if the result is less than €11,000 by UC, your household can receive the energy check.

      Example :

A family of 4 people (2 parents and 2 children) has an RFR €48,000.

      Their UC is 2.1, calculated as follows: 1 for 1er adult, 0.5 for the 2nd, and 0.3 for each child (1 + 0.5 + 0.3 + 0.3 = 2.1).

To determine their entitlement to the energy check, the RFR must be divided by the number of CPUs: 48,000/2.1 = €22,857.14.

This amount is higher than the €11,000However, the family cannot benefit from the energy check.

You can test your entitlement to the energy check and know its amount using a simulator:

Know if you are entitled to the energy check and how much

The Service and Payment Agency (ASP) draws up a list of beneficiaries of the energy check each year. This list consists of:

      • from a main list of automatically identified beneficiaries through the transmission of data by the tax authorities, public electricity distribution system operators and electricity suppliers
      • and a list of beneficiaries on their request.

If you are a beneficiary automatically identified, the ASP sends you the energy check directly by mail or online to your beneficiary account (if you have opted for this method of transmission).

      FYI

When your situation, with regard to the tax authorities, is corrected and whether this correction allows you to qualify for the energy check or entitles you to a higher amount, ASP issues an energy check or a supplementary energy check or redeems the check initially received for a new check.

If you have not received your energy check if you meet the attribution criteria (for example, you did not file your tax return or sent it out of time), you can apply online or by post.

The energy check takes the form of a check paper sent by mail to your address.

However, if you wish, you can request to receive your future energy checks in dematerialized format.

      Warning

Only electricity and gas bills can be paid online. However, the selected supplier must have signed up to the energy check and accepted this payment method. Other expenses such as the purchase of heating oil, wood, biomass or other fuels for heating or hot water production, or energy charges can therefore not be paid online.

The paper or dematerialized energy check is also accompanied by attestations to assert your rights associated with the energy check (unpaid bills, moving...). These certificates have a maturity date of 30 April following thecalendar year of their show.

      FYI

When an energy check is reissued (in case of loss of the initial energy check, for example), it is accompanied by a new certificate. The maturity of a re-issued certificate is not changed from the certificate it replaces.

You must create a beneficiary account on the website dedicated to the energy check and activate the e-Chèque énergie service.

You must scratch the code on the right grayed out part of the check (this is a PIN).

      Warning

Once scratched, the paper energy check is considered to be used online and can no longer be sent by post to the professional concerned to pay for your energy expenses. In addition, once you have activated the e-Chèque énergie service, all your future energy checks will be dematerialized.

You can pay your energy bills online.

You will have access to the balance and history of your payments.

The amount of the energy check is defined according to the RFR of your household and the number of people who compose it (calculated in UC).
