Gun Owners: Access to the Arms Information System (AIS)

The holders of major special weapons The following must create an account in the AIS:

  • Person with a hunting permit, possessor of a weapon, or wishing to acquire and possess a weapon
  • Person who holds or has held a license from the French Shooting Federation for the practice of shooting, ball-trap or biathlon, holder of a weapon, or wishing to acquire and hold a weapon
  • Person wishing to retain an inherited or found weapon
  • Person holding or wishing to acquire certain category C weapons and having neither a hunting license nor a license to practice shooting, ball-trap or biathlon. It's class weapons C3 (firearm manufactured to fire one bullet or more non-metallic projectiles), class C9 (Class A, B or C firearm) neutralized) and C12 (alarm and signaling weapon).

This page will be updated as the AIS is opened to other holders of particular weapons.

Weapons are classified into 4 categories according to their dangerousness. Category A is prohibited except in exceptional cases. Category B is subject to authorization. Category C is subject to declaration. Category D can be bought and held freely. The rules for buying, carrying, transporting and holding the weapon vary according to category A, B, C or D.
