Upgraded weapon: how to regularize your situation?

The evolution of the classification of a weapon involves respecting the rules corresponding to its new category. Rules vary depending on the situation:

Class D weapon upgraded to Class C

You bought a weapon classified as category D which is subsequently upgraded to category C and subject to a reporting scheme.

Example :

One alarm and signaling weapon has been upgraded to category C12 since 1er July 2024.

If you had an alarm and signaling weapon before 1er July 2024, you can keep it.

If you buy an alarm and signaling weapon on 1er july 2024 or later, you must declare the weapon online and provide a medical certificate.

Class C weapon upgraded to Class B

You bought a weapon classified as category C which is subsequently upgraded to category B and subject to an authorization scheme.

Example :

A rifle with a barred barrel has been upgraded to category B2 since 1er August 2018.

If you have a class B firearm, you can keep it if you meet the conditions for the class B firearm regime.

You must to request an authorization within 6 months following the entry into force of the upgrade of the weapon.

If the authorization is refused, you must relinquish the weapon.

Check with your local prefecture for directions.

Category B weapon upgraded to Category A

You bought a weapon classified as category B which is subsequently upgraded to category A.

He is forbidden individuals to acquire or possess a Class A weapon.

Example :

An automatic repeating firearm converted to a semi-automatic weapon was upgraded to Category A (A1-11°).

If you have an upgraded category A weapon, you have to divest yourself of it.

If you haven't, contact your prefecture to find out what to do.

The rule depends on date of acquisition.

Before November 1, 2021

If you have acquired before 1er november 2021 an automatic repeating firearm converted to a 1-shot or manual repeating firearm, since upgraded to Category A (A1-11°), you can preserve that gun.

You must have :

  • a valid sport shooting license for that weapon, if the weapon was classified as category B (B2° or B4°) before upgrading,
  • or your original declaration receipt, if the weapon was classified as category C before his upgrade.

You can continue to buy the corresponding ammunition on presentation of this title to the dealer.

After November 1, 2021

If you acquired an automatic repeat firearm that was converted to a 1-shot or manual repeat firearm after 1er november 2021, you You have to divest yourself of it.

The acquisition and possession of this weapon, classified as Category A (A1-11°), is forbidden.
