You have crossed a toll gate or traveled on a motorway in free-flow toll without paying and you want to know if you risk a fine? We tell you what you need to know.

If you do not pay a toll, the operator of the motorway or the work of art establishes a minutes from contravention and sends you a payment notice.

The payment notice shall state the date, time and place of the contravention, the facts found, the registration number and category of the vehicle, the name of the officer who found the contravention, and the total amount payable.

The total amount to be paid includes a lump sum compensation of €90, the amount TTC: titleContent unpaid tolland, if necessary, the right of way the bridge connecting the island to the mainland.

The procedure varies depending on whether it is a toll with or without a barrier:

Toll with barrier

You must pay the operator the amount indicated on the notice of payment in a 2 months delay following the sending of this notice.

The payment notice shall contain a payment card. You can pay by check attached to this payment card. You can also use a other means of payment specified in the notice.

Toll without barrier (free flow)

You must pay the operator the amount indicated on the notice of payment in a 2 months delay following the sending of this notice.

However, if you regularize your situation within 15 days of sending the payment notice, the lump-sum compensation of €90 is diminished à €10. From 16e day, you lose the benefit of this reduction.

The payment notice shall contain a payment card. You can pay by check attached to this payment card. You can also use a other means of payment specified in the notice.

The free-flow road toll does not include no toll barrier : the vehicles have no need to stop to pay the toll. They pass under gantries equipped to detect each vehicle and the recorded data (license plate, photo, place, date and time) allow to pay later, within 3 days.

The website of the Ministry of Transport indicates free-flowing toll motorways and means of payment.

If you challenge the facts, you must make a protest in the 2 months delay following the sending of the payment notice.

The payment notice shall contain a protest card. You must use this protest card or the dematerialized model proposed by the operator. Join the supporting documents corresponding to your situation.

In the absence of payment or protest within 2 months after the notice of payment is sent, you must pay a lump sum fine increased from €375.

If you do not pay the lump sum fine increased within 4 months from its sending, the administration block the sale of the vehicle as long as she's not paid.

Please note

If you have more than 5 fixed fines increased in 12 months, you risk a fine of €7,500.
