What does the Highway Code say about the mandatory equipment of a car (yellow vest, lights, tires…)? We tell you what you need to know.

During a roadside inspection, you must be able to present the yellow vest and the triangle to law enforcement. Failure to present them immediately is punishable by a fine of up to €38.
Following an emergency shutdown
Following an emergency shutdown, you must wear the high visibility vest if you are caused to leave your immobilized vehicle on the roadway or its surroundings.
You must use the warning triangle when immobilizing your car is a danger to traffic. For example, close to road intersections, turns, hilltops, level crossings, in case of insufficient visibility. You must place the triangle 30 meters or more from your car to signal it to other drivers, and turn on your hazard warning lights.
