Is there a period of validity for a civil status document?

Verified 22 May 2026 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

In principle, civil status documents (extracts and full copies) remain valid regardless of the date of issue. One birth certificate, of marriage or death shall remain valid until the elements contained therein have been modified.

However, for next steps, the act must date from 3 months maximum :

  • National identity card or passport
  • Marriage (if the service issuing the deed is French)
  • Civil partnerships: titleContent (if the service issuing the document is French).

Please note

If the document is issued by a civil registration service foreigner, the act must be of 6 months maximum for a marriage or Civil partnerships: titleContent, unless the country system does not provide for the updating of acts.
