Verified 13 février 2026 - Public Service / (Prime Minister)

Your situation

  • Your credit card has been used fraudulently
  • Your credit card details have been used without your consent
  • You still have your credit card
  • The fraud was committed on the Internet
Edit

You are victim of fraud to the credit card if you gather all of the following conditions :

  • Your credit card details have been used to make online purchases
  • You have not made the purchase (nor is it the purchase of another regular card user)
  • The credit card is always in your possession.

Usually, you are warned of fraud in the following cases

  • You notice on your bank statement online purchases that you did not make
  • You have received a confirmation code on your phone for a purchase you have not made
  • You have been warned by your bank of an attempt to fraudulently use your credit card on the internet.

Here are the steps to take if you are a victim of credit card fraud.

Step-by-step approach

You must do it as soon as possible to object, i.e. block the use of your card.

To do this, contact your bank or call the interbank server reserved for oppositions.

Who shall I contact

One registration number is handed to you.

You thus have a dated record of your opposition request.

If your credit card contract requires it, you must notify your agency of your objection by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt or on site, at the counter. This is not necessary if you have contacted your bank to object.

You can use the following mail template:

Confirm your statement of telephone objection to your credit card

The opposition procedure can be paid. Its cost varies according to the banks and the insurance guarantees that may be taken to cover the risk.

It is advisable to report fraud to law enforcement.

For this, you can make a report (online) or file a complaint (on site or by post):

  • Reporting consists in informing the investigation services of the existence of fraud. You can remain anonymous. You will not be informed of the outcome of the case.
  • The complaint is the act by which the victim of fraud informs the judicial authority. When filing a complaint, you must give your identity. This process engages you and the investigators can contact you.

The report, like the complaint, allows you to obtain a receipt, i.e. a document attesting to the registration of your declaration. You can send the receipt to your bank when you request a refund.
