Can a public servant work part-time for therapeutic reasons?

Yes, if your medical condition warrants it, you may be allowed to work part-time for therapeutic reasons when this allows you to remain or return to work. We present the rules concerning this part-time according to your public service of belonging (State - FPE, territorial - FPT, hospital - FPH).
EPF
You may be allowed to work part-time for therapeutic reasons if you are in one of the following situations:
- Part-time work allows your holding or your back to work and is recognized as capable of promote the improvement of your health
- Part-time work allows you to benefit from a rehabilitation or a vocational rehabilitation to find a job compatible with your health.
Part-time work for therapeutic reasons may occur as soon as your state of health justifies it, at the end of sick leave or without you having been off work before.
If you are a trainee civil servant, you may be allowed to work part-time for therapeutic reasons unless your traineeship involves professional education or must be completed in a training institution.
Part-time for therapeutic reasons may not be less than half-time.
You may be allowed to work at 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% or 90% full-time.
The authorization to work part-time for therapeutic reasons is granted and renewed per period from 1 to 3 months, in the one-year limit.
Part-time work for therapeutic reasons may be exercised in a continue or discontinuous for a maximum total duration of one year.
When the rights to work part-time for therapeutic reasons are exhausted, they are reconstituted at the end of a one-year period. Only periods made in position of activity and secondment shall be taken into account for the calculation of that one-year period.
At the end of this one-year period, you may be granted a new part-time authorization for therapeutic reasons.
The authorization to work part-time begins on the date of receipt of your application by your employer administration.
You must send your administration an employer application for authorization part-time work for therapeutic reasons.
Your application must be accompanied by a medical certificate with the following information:
- Desired part-time amount (50%, 60%, 70%, 80% or 90%)
- Part-time duration (1 to 3 months)
- Conditions for part-time work (continuous or discontinuous, in days or half-days not worked or in the form of a daily reduction in working hours).
In the event of a change of employer during a period of part-time work for therapeutic reasons, you retain your authorization to work part-time with your new employer.
The application for renewal of the authorization to work part-time for therapeutic reasons shall be made in the same way.
Your employer administration may, at your request :
- Change your part-time work rate before the expected end date of the current period
- End your part-time work before the scheduled date.
In these 2 cases, you must attach a medical certificate to your application.
Your employer administration may also, at your request, terminate your part-time work before the scheduled date if you are on sick leave or leave for temporary disability attributable to service (Citis) for more than 30 consecutive days.

When you ask to extend your part-time for therapeutic reasons beyond 3 months, your employer administration submits you to a examination by a licensed physician.
If you refuse to submit to it, your authorization to work part-time for therapeutic reasons is interrupted.
The licensed physician will provide an opinion on your request for an extension.
Their opinion covers the medical justification for your request, the amount of part-time work and the length of part-time work requested.
Your administration may also examine you at any time by a licensed doctor.
If you refuse to submit to it, your authorization to work part-time for therapeutic reasons is interrupted.
You or your employer administration can enter the medical advice for advice in the event of a challenge to the findings of a licensed physician.
If the medical board issues an unfavorable opinion to your request for part-time work for therapeutic reasons, your employer administration may reject your request or terminate the current part-time period.
Remuneration
During the period of part-time work for therapeutic reasons, you continue to receive your index treatment in full.
You also continue to receive the following compensation items in full if you receive them:
- Residence allowance
- Family Treatment Supplement (FTS)
- New Index Subsidy (NBI)
- Index treatment supplement.
Your premiums and allowances are also maintained in full during your part-time work period for therapeutic reasons.
Annual leave and RTT
Your annual leave and RTT entitlements are the same as those of any part-time staff member.
Other effects
If you were already part-time for another reason before obtaining authorization to work part-time for therapeutic reasons, your previous part-time period is terminated.
If you are probationary officialHowever, the period of part-time work experience for therapeutic reasons is fully taken into account, when you become a full member, for your advancement and ranking.
You cannot not perform toovertime during your part-time period for therapeutic reasons.
Your part-time period for therapeutic reasons is interrupted in case of placement in maternity or adoption leave or in the event of paternity and childcare leave.
During your part-time period for therapeutic reasons, you can request theauthorization to take training the conduct of which is incompatible with part-time work.
You must, in this case, justify by a medical certificate that this training is compatible with your state of health.
During the training, your authorization to work part-time for therapeutic reasons is suspended and you are restored to the rights of full-time civil servants (in particular with regard to annual leave).
