Free-flow toll is being rolled out on new highways

Publié le 21 octobre 2025 - Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

A new road axis has just adopted the free-flow toll system, which makes it possible in particular to make traffic more fluid. The Ministry of Ecological Transition is launching a communication campaign to explain this device to motorists.

The A13-A14 axis located between Paris and Normandy has just adopted the free flow toll system. Until now, it had been deployed on the A79 motorway in Allier, and on the A4 motorway (exit No. 36 only at the Boulay toll booth).

For the Ministry of Ecological Transition, this greener device saves time on journeys, saves fuel and reduces light pollution and footprint on areas occupied by toll barriers.

How does free-flow tolling work?

A free-flow toll highway is a toll motorway without a toll barrier. Motorists no longer have to stop to pay, as gantries placed on the road automatically calculate the cost of their journey.

They will then have to make the payment within 72 hours :

  • online via the motorway business website: from your customer account when it was set up, or directly without a customer account;
  • by credit card or cash in a tobacco office or press house equipped with the Nirio system (edited by the French Games).

If you have an electronic toll badge correctly attached in your vehicle, you do not have to do anything, the amount will be debited to you automatically.

What happens if you don't pay within 72 hours?

In the event of non-payment within the time limit, the motorway business shall draw up a report and send a notice of payment to the holder of the vehicle registration certificate. This notice shall include:

  • the amount due for the toll;
  • a lump sum of €90, reduced to €10 if payment is made within 15 days.

If you do not pay within 2 months, you will receive a lump sum plus €375.

Please note

To avoid payment delays, the motorway sites offer a toll notification service to be paid. You must indicate the registration number of your vehicle, your e-mail address and the motorways used.

Warning

Fraudulent messages calling for emergency payments have been identified since the deployment of the scheme. Do not reply to these messages or click on any attachments.

Toll payment in free flow is only made:

  • on the official websites of motorway businesses: Sanef (A13/A14, A4) or Aliaé (A79);
  • with tobacconists affiliated to the network Nirio ;
  • via subscription to electronic toll.
