How to benefit from the energy check in 2025?

The energy check allows low-income households to benefit from assistance to pay their electricity and gas bills. A decree and two decrees published in Official Journal of 1er august 2025 specify the modalities of the mechanism for the year 2025: the eligibility criteria, the amounts, the steps to be taken to benefit from the check, etc. Service-Public.fr informs you about the new rules of the energy check.

The sending of energy checks, which usually takes place in the spring, is postponed to autumn 2025 due to the late adoption of the 2025 budget law.

Every year, about 5.5 million low-income households receive an energy check. Beneficiaries are now identified by crossing the following information:

  • tax data, including the reference tax income and the number of persons connected to the tax household of the holder of the electricity supply contract;
  • the electricity delivery point number of the dwelling.

This information shall be transmitted to the Payment and Services Agency by the tax authorities, as well as by public electricity distribution system operators and electricity suppliers.

If you are eligible for the device, you do not have to take any steps. The check is sent to you automatically by the Service and Payment Agency.

Reminder

Until 2023, the list of beneficiaries of an energy check was drawn up by the tax authorities in relation to income and household composition (all persons living under the same roof), on the basis of the housing tax.

Due to the elimination of the housing tax on principal residences in 2023, recipients of an energy check for 2023 received the assistance automatically in 2024. An application window was then set up for households that did not benefit from the energy check in 2023 but were eligible for it in 2024.

How much for the energy check in 2025?

The amount of energy checks varies of €48 to €277, depending on income and the composition of the tax household.

The scale used for the energy check in 2025 is the same as last year. You can find this scale, with the amount of aid according to your situation, on our factsheet dedicated to the energy check (section “What are the conditions to benefit from the energy check?”).

Reminder

You can use your energy check for the following:

  • energy supply bills (electricity, gas, fuel oil, etc.) for your home;
  • heating costs related to the occupancy of a dwelling in eligible establishments (home-dwellings, nursing homes and independent residences, among others).

Now you can no longer use your energy check to pay for energy retrofits. The “works vouchers” issued before the entry into force of the Law of 14 February 2025 on finance for 2025 remain usable until their expiry date.

What if you haven't received a check when you think you're eligible?

Energy checks will be sent to eligible households identified in November 2025.

For people who think they are eligible for the scheme and who have not received this financial assistance, a platform will be available from mid-October 2025 until 28 February 2026 on the energy check website. Applications for energy checks can also be made by post.

Please note

Energy checks, traditionally sent in paper format, are now available in digital version. The “e-Chèque énergie” service allows you to:

  • consult your total balance available in e-Check;
  • pay your energy bills, using all or part of your balance with your various energy suppliers if they accept this means of payment.

To activate this service, you must log in to your “beneficiary” area of the energy check site.
