Municipal elections 2026: the deadline for registering on the lists of electors is approaching

Municipal elections will be held on 15 and 22 March. If you are not yet registered to vote, you still have a few days to do so. What is the deadline to register? What documents are needed? Public Service inform you.

The next municipal elections will be held on Sunday, March 15, and Sunday, March 22 in the municipalities concerned by a second round. To vote, you must be registered on the electoral lists of your commune.

The requirements for voting are as follows:

  • be of French nationality;
  • enjoy civil and political rights;
  • be of full age (18 years of age on the eve of the election);
  • have an attachment with the voting commune.
Deadlines to register on the lists

Online registration

The deadline is February 4. You can use the dedicated online service: Online application to register on the electoral roll. You will only need to provide a scanned version of the following documents:

  • a valid proof of identity;
  • proof of residence of less than 3 months.

Registration at the town hall or by post

The deadline to register at the town hall (ticket office) or by post is February 6. You will need to provide the following documents:

These deadlines shall be postponed to March 5, 2026 if changes are to occur in your situation after the deadlines: acquisition of french nationality, moving to another municipality for professional reasons, recovery of the right to vote. Registration on the electoral roll is automatic at the age of 18 for young people who completed the citizen census at 16. If this census did not take place or if it was done late, registration is not automatic and you will have to do the registration process.

To complete the online procedure, you must be already 18 years old. If you do it in town hall or by mail, you do not have to wait until you are 18 years old.

You can consult the online service Check your electoral registration and polling station which allows you to:

  • know the number and address of your polling station
  • know your national voter number required to establish a proxy ;
  • find all the powers of attorney that you have given or received;
  • download your certificate of registration on the lists of electors.

Please note

Your electoral card is sent to your home no later than 3 days before the first round of the election. If you have not received it, you can pick it up at the polling station on election day by presenting your identity card.
