Do you have to vaccinate your child to enroll him in school, nursery or daycare?

Yes. Your child must be vaccinated (unless there is a recognized medical contraindication) in order to be admitted to a nursery, school, day care center, summer camp or any other children's community.

Please note

If your child is not up to date with their vaccinations, temporary admission is possible. You then have 3 months to get vaccinated. If you don't, the person in charge of the nursery, school or daycare can exclude your child.

Child born before 2018

The mandatory vaccinations are as follows:

  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for residents of the department of French Guiana older than 12 months (one year) or any person staying there.

Persons with parental authority must ensure that this obligation is respected.

The recommended vaccinations concern the following diseases and infections:

  • Diseases such as tuberculosis, pertussis, rubella, measles, and mumps, chickenpox, influenza, hepatitis B, shingles
  • Invasive haemophilus influenzae type B, pneumococcal, meningococcal C infections
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections.

A national HPV vaccination campaign is being organized in schools and health-care facilities for children with disabilities.

The doctor who performs the vaccine must mention it on the your child's health record. You must present the health record as proof of completion of the mandatory vaccinations.

Other vaccinations (whooping cough, BCG, MMR in particular) are not mandatory.

Child born between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2022

The mandatory vaccinations for babies and children:

  • Diphtheria, tetanus and poliomyelitis (DTP)
  • Whooping cough
  • Invasive Haemophilus influenzae type B infections
  • Hepatitis B
  • Invasive pneumococcal infections
  • Meningococcal serogroup C
  • Measles, mumps and rubella.

And, for residents of Guyana, yellow fever from 1 year.

The recommended vaccinations concern diseases such as:

  • Tb
  • Chickenpox
  • Influenza
  • Shingles
  • Human papillomavirus infections
  • Rotavirus.

Child born from 2023

The mandatory vaccinations for babies and children:

  • Diphtheria, tetanus and poliomyelitis (DTP)
  • Whooping cough
  • Invasive Haemophilus influenzae type B infections
  • Hepatitis B
  • Invasive pneumococcal infections
  • Meningococcal serogroup A, B, C, W and Y
  • Measles, mumps and rubella.

And, for residents of Guyana, yellow fever from 1 year.
