Possession of vaccines by health professionals

The Social Security Funding Act for 2026 aims to enable private physicians, midwives and nurses and health centers to hold vaccines to administer to those targeted by the recommendations of the immunization schedule.

A decree will specify the application procedures for this measure, including the locations of practice and the vaccines concerned, as well as the supply, conservation and traceability rules.

Once published, this page will be updated.

In particular, doctors, midwives, nurses and certain preventive structures may carry out vaccinations, in accordance with the schedule of vaccinations and as part of the exercise of their competences. The same applies to pharmacists. We present the regulations to you.

Doctors are authorized to carry out all diagnostic, preventive and treatment procedures, including vaccinations.

Who shall I contact

A doctor, even a retiree, can prescribe and administer the monkeypox vaccine.

Midwives can prescribe the vaccines referred to in schedule of vaccinations to all persons for whom these vaccinations are recommended. However, they cannot prescribe certain vaccines (live attenuated vaccines) among the immunocompromised persons.

Midwives can administer all vaccines mentioned in the vaccination schedule to all persons for whom these vaccinations are recommended.

They can prescribe and administer the seasonal influenza vaccine and Covid to all people targeted or not targeted by vaccination recommendations.

Nurses, including those practicing in a medical biology laboratory or an indoor pharmacy in an institution, may prescribe all vaccines mentioned in the schedule of vaccinations based on the recommendations of this calendar to persons 11 years of age and older. However, they cannot prescribe the live attenuated vaccines among the immunocompromised persons.

They can administer without prior medical prescription of the injection procedure all vaccines mentioned in this schedule of vaccinations to people 11 years and older.

They can prescribe and administer seasonal influenza vaccine for all individuals 11 years of age and older who are targeted or not targeted by vaccine recommendations.

Finally, they can prescribe and administer the Covid vaccine for people aged 5 years and older.

Nurses can administer the monkeypox vaccine. The same applies to retired nurses.

Retired nurses can also prescribe it if they have been trained to do so while working.

Pharmacists, as well as pharmacists practicing in a laboratory of medical biology or in a pharmacy for indoor use of an establishment, may prescribe all vaccines mentioned in the schedule of vaccinations according to the recommendations of this calendar to individuals 11 years of age or older. However, they cannot prescribe the live attenuated vaccines among the immunocompromised persons.

They can administer all vaccines mentioned in the schedule of vaccinations to the elderly 11 years of age or older.

They can prescribe and administer :

  • Seasonal flu vaccine for all people 11 years of age or older
  • The Covid vaccine for the elderly 5 years of age and older.

Pharmacists of pharmacies designated by theARS: titleContent may prescribe and administer the monkeypox vaccine.

Pharmacy preparers, if trained in the administration of the vaccine and under the supervision of a pharmacist, in pharmacies designated by theARS: titleContent may administer it.

Pharmacy preparers may, under the supervision of a pharmacist trained in the administration or prescription of vaccines or who has received specific training in Covid vaccination, administer :

  • Vaccines mentioned in the schedule of vaccinations to the elderly 11 years of age or older
  • The flu vaccine for the elderly 11 years of age or older
  • The Covid vaccine for the elderly 5 years of age and older.

Pharmacy preparers, if trained in the administration of the vaccine and under the supervision of a pharmacist, in pharmacies designated by theARS: titleContent may administer monkeypox vaccine.

Students in the 2nd cycle of medical studies

Students in 2e cycle of medical studies, as part of the national vaccination campaign against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, shall have the authorization toadminister the HPI vaccine. For this, they must meet the following 2 conditions:

  • Have followed the theoretical and practical lessons concerning vaccination
  • Be placed under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Students of 2e cycle of medical studies can administer the monkeypox vaccine in the presence of a doctor or nurse. For this, they must have benefited from:

  • Either theoretical and practical lessons related to vaccination as part of their curriculum
  • Or specific training in vaccination against monkeypox.

Students in the 3rd cycle of medical studies

These students can administer under the supervision of a supervisor:

These medical students can administer the monkeypox vaccine in the presence of a doctor or nurse. For this, they must have benefited from:

  • Either theoretical and practical lessons related to vaccination as part of their curriculum
  • Or specific training in vaccination against monkeypox.

Students in the 3rd cycle of pharmaceutical studies

Some students in 3e cycle of pharmaceutical studies may administer under the supervision of a supervisor:

The PMI centers provide health follow-up to pregnant women and children up to 6 years of age.

The vaccinations carried out for these people by the professionals authorized to vaccinate present in these centers (doctors, midwives and nurses) are free of charge.

Who shall I contact

Vaccination against yellow fever may only be carried out in a yellow fever vaccination center approved by the health authorities. For example, midwives, pharmacists and nurses at these centers can administer this vaccine.

Reimbursable vaccines from the vaccination schedule administered in yellow fever vaccination centers, when the traveler is vaccinated by the health professionals of these centers, can be covered by the Health Insurance, for the mandatory part.

Some vaccinations (influenza, tetanus and other vaccines depending on the biological risks involved) can be carried out by the occupational physician (or the nurse on medical prescription) in the context of prevention and preservation of health at work.

Professionals practicing in a medical biology laboratory (e.g. medical biologists, doctors and pharmacists authorized to act as medical biologists) may:

  • Prescribe all vaccines mentioned in the schedule of vaccinations based on the recommendations of this calendar to persons 11 years of age and older. However, they cannot prescribe the live attenuated vaccines among the immunocompromised persons.
  • Aadminister all vaccines mentioned in the schedule of vaccinations for people aged 11 years and older
  • Prescribe and administer seasonal influenza vaccine for all persons 11 years of age and older
  • Prescribe and administer the Covid vaccine to people aged 5 years and older.
