How can a volunteer in an association be trained?
Verified 11 May 2026 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
There are a number of ways in which a volunteer can be trained, whether to acquire new skills or to carry out his or her duties in an association. These courses can be financed in particular through the Personal Training Account (CPF), the Citizen Engagement Account (CEC), or followed as part of a specific leave. We present you the information you need to know to choose the right device for your situation.
Whether you are private sector employee or public official of State, territorial or hospital worker, you have the option to train using your Personal Training Account (PTC). It is accessible on My training account :
If you don't have enough rights to your CPF to cover training, you can top up with your own funds, those of your employer, or with financial support from a Competency Operator (OPCO).
In addition, your association can also add credits to your CPF via the EQF.
Your Citizen Engagement Account (CEC) identifies your activities as an association volunteer, volunteer, reservist or teacher.
It allows you to acquire training rights registered in your personal training account (CPF).
You must carry out these activities during 200 hours minimum per year in one or more associations. These activities can allow you to acquire €240 per year and €720 maximum over 3 years of right to training.
You can use these rights to finance training, which is intended for you, if you are a volunteer, a volunteer of civic service or a firefighter, with the aim of acquiring the skills necessary for the exercise of your missions.
The EQF is available on My training account :

You can also train as part of skills development plan of your company.
If you hold a position on the board of directors or management of a recognized association (1901 law), existing for at least 1 year, you can request a special leave (leave of association commitment) to train. This right applies to:
- Private sector employees
- Officials
- Delegated volunteers of the Defender of Rights.
This leave can be used for training related to your responsibilities in the association.
You must make a written request to your employer. This should include the following:
- Name of the association in which you are engaged
- Desired length of leave
- Nature of the training or appointment planned during this leave.
The employer may refuse or postpone the leave if service imperatives warrant it, but must give reasons for its decision.
The leave of association may last up to 6 days a year. It is unpaid, but a branch or company agreement may provide for remuneration.
You can train in association management to acquire the skills necessary for the administration, operation and development of an association.
This training, called certificate of training in associative management (CFGA), has been renovated as part of the scheme Certif'Asso.
It is accessible to anyone aged at least 16 years on the first day of training.
The training includes:
- theoretical training of at least 8 p.m., organized around a common core and modules adapted to the needs of the volunteer
- and practical training in association.
Practical training can be carried out before, during or after the theoretical training. It is of a duration of approximately 15 days, and can be adapted or even dispensed, depending on the volunteer's experience.
The entire route is defined by a national benchmark set by decree.
At the end of the training, a certificate is issued to the volunteer.
To find out which organizations offer this training, you can contact the regional academic delegation for youth, commitment and sports (Drajes) on which you depend.
You have the possibility to validate the achievements of your associative experience to obtain a certification registered at National Register of Professional Qualifications (NCPR).
