Pink license plates arrive in 2026

An order published in Official Journal of 2 December 2025 amends the rules on provisional registration plates WW, for new vehicles imported or awaiting final registration, and W garage, for professionals. Public Service explains what changes from 1er January 2026.

What information on this new provisional license plate?

The new temporary registration plates WW and W garage are presented on a pink background with black characters.

Indications such as the end date of validity (month/year) of the provisional certificate of registration WW for registrations in WW shall be entered in right of the plate.

The dimensions and format are unchanged.

The current plates remain valid until they expire.

Who is concerned?

  • Individuals with a vehicle:
    • nine pending final;
    • imported from the foreigner.
  • Automotive professionals (W garage).

Why a new provisional license plate?

The creation of a specific registration plate will make it easy to identify vehicles under provisional registration (WW or W garage). This will facilitate detection and control by law enforcement, thereby reducing the risk of fraud associated with these temporary registrations in circulation.

Please note

More than 400,000 temporary WW registrations and W garage registrations per year are affected.

What is a provisional certificate of registration?

Provisional Certificate of Registration (CPI WW) is issued to allow the circulation of certain vehicles in France and abroad. The validity of a French CPI WW remains subject to the agreement of the State in which you will circulate.

The WW CPI shall be issued in the following cases:

  • New or used vehicles awaiting documents (conformity, technical inspection, tax proof).
  • Vehicles for export.
  • New vehicles sold complete or incomplete for body.

Period of validity:

  • Standard: 2 months.
  • Incomplete new vehicle for bodywork or self-propelled agricultural machine: 3 months.

It can be extended only once automatically for the same period if the final certificate has not yet been issued.
