When will the next municipal elections take place?

Publié le 29 août 2025 - Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

A decree published in Official Journal August 28, 2025 set the dates for the next municipal elections.

The first round of the next municipal elections will be held on March 15, 2026, and the second round will be held on March 22 in the municipalities where this will be necessary.

You can now check on the electoral list of which commune you are registered thanks to our online service “interrogate your electoral situation”. To vote in another city, you must submit an application for registration on the electoral list of this commune by friday, february 6, 2026.

FYI

To be registered on the electoral list of a commune, you must be in one of the following situations:

  • your home is in the municipality (or you live in this municipality, for example by staying with a relative);
  • you are subject to local municipal taxes;
  • you are the manager or partner of a company located in the municipality.

In some cases, your application may be filed later. You can thus apply to be registered on the electoral list of a commune until March 5, 2026, in particular if the following events occurred after February 6, 2026:

  • you have acquired French nationality;
  • you have moved to another municipality for professional reasons;
  • you have regained the right to vote after being deprived of it by court order.

Please note

The decree published in Official Journal of August 28, 2025, convenes the electors to conduct the election:

  • municipal and community councilors;
  • advisers from Paris;
  • district councilors from Paris, Lyon and Marseille;
  • Metropolitan councilors from Lyon.

In Paris, Lyon and Marseille, as well as in municipalities with less than 1,000 inhabitants, the voting system for municipal elections is changing.
