The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) facilitates access to healthcare for every traveler traveling within the EU or the EU (EEE), as well as in Switzerland and the UK.

It certifies your rights to health insurance and allows you to benefit from on-site medical care, according to the legislation and formalities in force in the country of stay. Only care that has become necessary during the stay (urgent, unannounced) can be covered by the EHIC.

The map is individual and nominative : each member of the family (including young people under 16) must have their own card. It is issued free of charge and is valid for 2 years.

Attention, it is not usable in France and does not replace your Vitale card.

FYI

If you have the identity card in bank card format (CNIe), you can save your Vital Card in your mobile phone via the France Identity application.

How to obtain or renew the EHIC?

You must apply for a card 15 days before your departure via your account ameli :

  1. Log in with your credentials or create an account.
  2. Go to the section « My steps » then « Order an EHIC ».
  3. Check his address.
  4. Your card will be sent to you by post.

You can also order your EHIC from the Ameli account app for smartphone, available on theApp Store and Google Play.

In case of emergency or too late request, you can make a request for provisional certificate directly from your ameli account. It is issued automatically to you and is valid for 3 months. It certifies your rights while waiting to receive the card.

Please note
