What is a Segpa class?

Verified 08 December 2025 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

If your child has severe and long-term academic difficulties, the Segpa: titleContent can be a solution to adapt your schooling to college. Here is the information you need to know about the device.

A class Segpa: titleContent welcomes young people from the 6e to 3e with significant academic difficulties. These are difficulties that cannot be solved by school aid and support actions.

The class is integrated into a college. It brings together a small group of students (16 maximum) to individualize the course of each.

The Segpa must allow your child to access vocational training or to continue his studies after the 3e.

Orientation after CM2

At the end of CM1, if your child is experiencing serious academic difficulties, the teaching team can suggest adapting his schooling for the year of CM2. This includes prevention, assistance and individualized support.

If the academic difficulties are not resolved during the year of CM2, the council of teachers can offer you an orientation in Segpa class. In this case, the council of masters receives you to present the device.

You can decide whether to accept or refuse orientation in Segpa. If you refuse the proposal, your child is assigned to 6e ordinary.

Orientation in the course of schooling at college

At the end of the year 6eHowever, the class council may feel that your child's academic difficulties are too great to be solved with a support device.

In this case, before the class council of the second quarter, the head of the school informs you of the possibility of an orientation in Segpa and presents you the device.

A Segpa class orientation can be offered by the class council of the second quarter.

You can decide whether to accept it or not. If you refuse the proposal, your child is assigned to 5e It will benefit from special pedagogical support.

Exceptionally, your child can also enter Segpa in class of 4e.

Please note

Your child can also be enrolled in Segpa if he/she has a personalized schooling project (PPS). The CDAPH: titleContent must have taken a policy decision to that effect.

The Segpa allows your child to follow teachings adapted to his difficulties. It benefits from individualized follow-up.

Students follow the same curricula as their general section classmates, but with adaptations and accommodations.

General education is provided by teachers from schools, middle schools and high schools. Vocational high school teachers are responsible for vocational education.

During school, your child performs internships in company (in 4e and in 3e).

The training must enable him to acquire the common base of knowledge and skills and to present themselves at the end of the college to the national patent diploma (DNB).

End of year of 3e, your child passes the General Training Certificate (GTC) or the national patent diploma (DNB).

After middle school, your child must be able to access training, at least at the level of one Certificate of Professional Competence (CAP).

He can therefore continue his training in vocational high school or in Apprenticeship Training Center (CFA).
