Obtain heat using a solar thermal installation (solar heating)
Verified 13 May 2026 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Do you want to use solar energy to heat your home (heating and domestic hot water)? A solar thermal installation is then necessary. We're taking stock of the regulations.
Warning
Solar thermal installation should not be confused with photovoltaic panels that turn light into electricity.
To produce heat, you need to settle the following equipment:
- Solar Sensors. These are panels settled on your roof that capture the sun's radiation to turn it into heat. They act as solar boilers.
- Storage balloon. It is a tank that stores the heat produced and is supplied by a network of piping ensuring the junction with the solar collectors.
- Back-up energy. In most cases, an additional source of energy is needed to ensure that heat production meets your needs, regardless of the season and the level of sunshine. The heat relay can be provided by an independent system (fireplace, stove, electrical resistance, etc.). It can also be provided by a system coupled to your solar installation. The additional production is then ensured by a traditional boiler.
- Regulator. It makes it possible to manage the solar thermal production of the panels. It prioritizes solar energy over back-up generation devices. In the event of a lack of sunlight, it modulates the supply of additional energy to maintain an optimal temperature. When the production of the system exceeds your actual consumption, it controls possible overheating of the panels.
Heat production can be used for the following purposes:
- Heating domestic hot water
- Ensure the production of heating
- Combine the 2, if your installation allows it.
Yes, you need to make a prior declaration of works in town hall, because the installation will change the exterior appearance of your house.
Please note
If it is a new construction, the installation request can be integrated into the building permit.
The price of a solar thermal installation is not framed : it depends on the professional chosen and the materials used.
