Can a child or adolescent with a disability receive support at school or outside school?

Verified 23 April 2026 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Yes, with the help of an accompanying person for pupils with disabilities (AESH) and/or a special education and home care service (Sessad).

Your child can get support during or outside school if they need care and/or school support. This support can be offered by the following mechanisms:

  • Accompanying students with disabilities (AESH)
  • Special Education and Home Care Service (Sessad).

AESH is a person who intervenes in your child's classroom in consultation with the teacher. The AESH helps your child to participate in the collective life of the school (for example, help with note-taking, help to promote exchanges with other students, help with the handling of materials, ...). EHSA depends on your child's school.

The SessadAs for him, it is composed of a multidisciplinary team (child psychiatrist, psychomotor therapist, speech therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, ...). It supports the overall development of your child's abilities (for example, language, motor skills or autonomy) in his various places of life and activity (home, nursery, school, leisure or holiday center…). The Sessad does not depend on your child's school, although it can intervene in connection with it and be associated with it when necessary.

Your child may have access to the 2 devices, whether in school, middle school or high school.

To be able to benefit from support for your child, you must apply to the departmental house for disabled people (MDPH).

The request can be made online through an online service, if the MDPH of your residence offers it:

MDPH (AAH, PCH, admission to Ésat, accommodation...) and renewal

You can also make your request by post through a form:

Application or renewal of disability benefits (AEEH, AAH, PCH, CMI, accommodation, Ésat...)

You must reach supporting documents mentioned during your online application or on the form.

The documents must be sent (or scanned if you apply online) to the MDPH of your place of residence.

Who shall I contact

The MDPH's Commission des droits pour l'autonomie des personnes handicapées (CDAPH) decides, according to your child's needs, which type of support he or she should be referred to.

Its decision shall be delivered within 4 months.

The absence of response of CDAPH for more than 4 months is implied rejection decision.

The decision of the CDAPH to refuse may be the subject of a compulsory prior administrative appeal (Rapo) with the MDPH. This remedy must be exercised before any appeal to the court.

The Report must be submitted within 2 months from the receipt of the contested decision. This decision must be attached to your appeal.

Failure to respond to MDPH for more than 2 months is an implied decision to reject.

Based on that decision, explicit or implicit, you have 2 months to appeal to the court of law the location of your residence.

Please note

The missions AESH and Sessad are specified in the personalized schooling project (PPS) of your child.
