You're gonna be absent the voting day of an election? You can load one voter to vote in your place in your polling station. For this, you need to make a proxy of voting. Do this step at the earliest ensures you can vote by proxy on the day of the vote. The situation varies depending on how you do the process in France or abroad. In France

If you are absent on voting day (election or referendum), you can load another voter from vote for you at your polling station.

For this, you must make a power of attorney. You do not have to provide proof of absence.

Watch out, on the day of the vote, the elector responsible for voting for you may not have only one power of attorney made in France.

General case

1. You must use the online service Power of Attorney, connect to it with France Connect and enter an email address.

In the case of the elector responsible for voting for you (your agent), you must know:

  • That is, his date of birth and his voter number. You can find this number using this online service and on your electoral map.
  • Either his date of birth, his first names, his name and the commune where he votes.

To vote in France

You designate freely the voter who will vote for you.

But there are two exceptions:

  • If you are placed under guardianship, you cannot designate some people around you.
  • You can designate a European citizen who votes in France, only for the elections European and/or municipal.

The elector you designate may have on the day of the vote:

  • That is 1 power of attorney made in France
  • 1 power of attorney issued abroad (i.e. in a consulate or embassy)
  • Either 1 proxy made in France and 1 proxy made abroad
  • That is 2 powers of attorney made abroad
  • Either 1 power of attorney made in France and 2 powers of attorney made abroad if at least 1 of the electors who designated him is registered on a consular electoral list
  • 3 powers of attorney issued abroad if at least 1 of the electors who designated him is registered on a consular list of electors.

On the day of the vote, the elector you have designated vote for you at your polling station.

Example :

You are registered on the electoral list of the city of Denain and your polling station is No. 1 (in Denain).

You designate an elector registered on the electoral list of the city of Marly, and whose polling station is No. 2 (in Marly).

On the day of the vote, the elector you have designated will have to vote for you at the polling station No. 1 in the city of Denain.

If you are a New Caledonia voter, you need to know your polling station using from another online service.

To vote from the foreigner

You designate freely the voter who will vote for you.

But if you are placed under guardianship, you cannot designate some people around you.

  • 1 power of attorney issued abroad (i.e. in a consulate or embassy)

You have to make the power of attorney as soon as possible, because of the delays in forwarding and processing the power of attorney.

Indeed, you may not be able to vote if the town hall does not receive your power of attorney on time or if it does not have the time necessary to take it into account.

You can make a proxy for only one election or for a period of determined :

For an election (or referendum)

You must indicate the election (or referendum), its date and whether the power of attorney relates to 1er tower, the 2ndd tower or the 2 towers.

To vote by proxy in the 2 rounds of an election, you can:

  • Or designate a single elector
  • Or designate a different voter for each round, but then you must make 2 separate proxies.

FYI  

When several elections are held on the same day, the power of attorney is obligatorily valid for all these elections.

For a fixed period of time

You can make a proxy for a maximum duration :

  • Of one year if you are registered on a list of electors municipal
  • From 3 years if you are registered on a list of electors consular.

But nothing prevents you from making a power of attorney for a shorter period (3 months, 6 months or 1 year for example).

Warning  

You do not have access to this service if you or the elector responsible for voting for you is registered on a New Caledonia voters list.

To vote personally, you have no need to terminate the power of attorney. Simply inform the elector responsible for voting for you and go to the polling station before they do. If this voter did not come to vote for you before you, you can vote personally.

However, you can choose to terminate the power of attorney, especially if you want to subsequently instruct another voter to vote for you.

  • Make an appointment with your consulate or embassy
  • Go to your consulate or embassy, with your identity card “in bank card format” and your phone.

Within 48 hours of your appointment, you will be informed, by email and in the France Identité application, of the outcome of your application for certification.

3. Terminate the power of attorney

You must use the online service Power of Attorney.

To do this, you need to log in with France Connect and provide an email address.

In the "Terminate my power of attorney", you must indicate your municipality or voting consulate and request the termination of all powers of attorney established previously.

  • An email containing the receipt of your cancelation request
  • And an email confirming the termination of your powers of attorney.

With the form to print (then going to the consulate or embassy)

1. You must use this form to terminate your proxy:

You must:

  • Either fill it out online, then print it on 2 sheets (no double-sided)
  • Either print it on 2 sheets (no double-sided), then fill it by hand (legibly and without scratches).

To complete the form:

  • You must provide your national voter number and the number of the elector responsible for voting for you. You can find out these numbers using this online service or the electoral map.
  • You do not have to fill in the fields reserved for administration.

2. You must then present yourself in person and with one proof of identity in a consulate or embassy of your choice.

You have to show up in person with a proof of identity in a consulate or embassy.

You fill out a form there.
