Request for a second family record book in case of divorce or separation

In the event of divorce or separation, each spouse or parent may request a second family record book. This booklet may be required to complete certain administrative procedures, such as enrolling children in school or applying for a family benefit. Want to know how to get a 2nd family booklet? You can request a second family booklet if you are divorced or separated and do not have the original booklet.

Once divorced or separated, the application can be made to any time.

The approach varies according to your place of residence:

General case

You must contact the town hall where you live.

You must then send it to your town hall.

You must address the French consular authorities of your country of residence.

The documents differ depending on your situation, namely whether you were married, past or cohabiting:

You were married

You must present your ID.

You must provide proof of the divorce or legal separation (court decision, court agreement, divorce agreement or legal separation by mutual consent).

If you can present the 1er family booklet, the 2nd booklet is established by reproduction of the previous one.

Otherwise, the registrar shall provide a new booklet and enter extracts of the documents in his possession. He then sends the new booklet to the town halls that may have documents to be included in the booklet.

You were past or concubines

You must present your ID.

You must explain your interest in owning your own booklet to justify your request (de facto separation, disagreement,...).

You must present proof (separate homes, witness certificates, attestation of the other parent,...).

If you can present the 1er family booklet, the 2nd booklet is established by reproduction of the previous one.

Otherwise, the registrar shall provide a new booklet and enter extracts of the documents in his possession. He then sends the new booklet to the town halls that may have documents to be included in the booklet.

Issuance of a 2nd booklet is free of charge.

The period depends on the duration of treatment by each town hall concerned by the booklet (town hall of the marriage or town halls of birth of parents and town halls of birth of children).

You can collect the family booklet from the town hall or consulate where you made your request.
