Ban on mobile phones in high school: what are the terms?

Each high school must now indicate in its rules and regulations the terms of the ban on the use of mobile phones and other connected objects by pupils.

This prohibition may be implemented, for example, through:

• individual lockers, in which students must drop off their mobile phones upon arrival at the high school;
• a collective box, intended to collect the mobile phones of several students;
• an individual pouch, in which each high school student must store his or her phone (the high school student must lock the pouch when he or she arrives at the school, then he or she can unlock it when he or she leaves the high school).

Exceptions to this prohibition may be determined by each establishmentwithin the rules and regulations: pedagogical uses of the mobile phone or a connected object supervised by a member of the educational community, use within the documentation and information center, etc.

In addition, the law systematically allows the use of a mobile phone or a connected object by a student for a medical reason (this concerns in particular students with a disability or a debilitating health disorder).

When a student does not comply with the ban on the use of a mobile phone or a connected object, a response adapted to the situation must be provided by the staff of the institution (a graduated, personalized and proportionate response). For example, the mobile phone or connected object may be confiscated; or the student may be subject to disciplinary action.
