Two obesity drugs reimbursed from 15 June
Publié le 01 juin 2026 - Mise à jour le 15 juin 2026 - Public Service / (Prime Minister)
Two drugs to reduce obesity will be reimbursed by the Health Insurance as of June 15, in a controlled framework. This measure has just been confirmed by several orders issued in Official journal of the French Republic May 28, 2026. It responds to the recommendations of the French Health Authority (HAS), whereas in 2025, 17.4% of adults were obese in France. Who can benefit from care? Public Service inform you.

The 2 drug treatments of obesity (TMO) Wegovy and Mounjaro will be covered by the Health Insurance from 15 june 2026under certain conditions. These injectable treatments, originally developed for diabetes, are analogs of GLP-1, a family of drugs that slow digestion and increase the feeling of satiety.
These medicines have been available in France since 2024 and are delivered by prescription at a price set by the laboratory, without reimbursement possible by the Health Insurance.
They are indicated as second-line treatment in weight control in the following cases:
- in adults with a baseline BMI greater than or equal to 30, or a BMI between 27 and 30 associated with at least one weight-related comorbidity;
- adolescents (12 years of age and older) who are obese and weigh more than 60 kg.
GLP-1 analogs should not be prescribed for cosmetic purposes in people who are not overweight or have any associated health problems, or risk serious adverse effects.
Which patients are eligible for treatment?
Patients eligible for reimbursement for these treatments are those eligible for bariatric surgery (surgery to achieve significant weight loss through changes to the digestive tract). This type of treatment cannot be prescribed only as a second intention, in the event of failure of nutritional management (i.e. a weight loss of 5% of the total weight after 6 months). He has to intervene in addition to a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The following are concerned:
- people with a body mass index (BMI) 40 or more (massive obesity) without comorbidity ;
- people with a BMI 35 or more (severe obesity) with comorbidity.
Who needs to prescribe this type of medication for it to be reimbursed?
The initial prescription of the drug is reserved for professionals and structures involved in the management of obesity at levels 2 and 3 : doctors practicing in obesity centers (CSO); university hospitals (CHU); medical care and rehabilitation institutions (SMR) in gastroenterology, endocrinology, diabetes, nutrition; endocrinologists in connection with a CSO.
What financial support?
The insured person's participation rate is set at 35%, i.e 65% coverage by the Health Insurance. The possibility of full coverage will have to be checked on a case-by-case basis, depending on the status of the insured, a possible long-term illness (ALD), the applicable exemptions and the possession of supplementary health.
Please note
The 2 drugs can always be prescribed by a general practitioner or specialist without coverage by the Health Insurance. The prescription must respect the framework of eligible patients defined by the National Authority for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM): BMI greater than or equal to 27 associated with weight-related comorbidity; or BMI greater than or equal to 30, in addition to therapeutic lifestyle changes.
