A new simulator to know when to provide a medical certificate

Publié le 12 mars 2026 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Public Service Offers an online simulator to find out if a medical certificate is required as part of an application for a personalized autonomy allowance (APA) or a disability-related benefit application. In a few questions, the tool tells you, depending on your situation and your type of approach, whether this certificate should be attached to your file.

THEAPA  (personalized autonomy allowance) is an allowance for people aged 60 and over who are losing their autonomy. There are two different APAs:

  • the APA at home for people living in an apartment or house, independent residence or family home. The APA is used to pay all or part of the expenses necessary to allow you to stay at home. It is paid by the services of the department.
  • ABS in institutions for persons housed in a medical-social institution (e.g. Ehpad: titleContent or USLD: titleContent). The APA covers part of the dependency rate set by the establishment.

The online simulator “When to provide a medical certificate in case of disability or for the APA?” tells you in which cases you must provide a medical certificate for your applicationcustom autonomy allocation (APA), or for your requests for benefits related to your disability. Simply tick the box corresponding to your request:

  • Personalized Autonomy Allowance (APA) at home
  • Personalized Independence Allowance (APA) in institutions
  • Disability benefits with the MDPH (AAH, PCH…)

For disability benefits, you must indicate whether this is a first application or a renewal. In case of renewal, the tool will ask you if your situation has changed.

For each situation, you will get an answer telling you whether the medical certificate must be completed.

FYI

All applications for benefits and financial assistance are gathered together in a single form.
