Takata airbags

Enhanced technical inspection from 2026

Publié le 11 décembre 2025 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Certain provisions of the roadworthiness test will be amended from 1er January 2026. A decree of 8 December 2025 specifies the measures for vehicles affected by “serious” recall campaigns and which have not been repaired. A novelty that should make it possible to check whether vehicles are still equipped with Takata airbags, classified prohibited.

With this decree, the Ministry of Transport is continuing its preventive actions against the many accidents related to Takata airbags.

The text introduced from 1er January a countervisit for critical failure. This applies to vehicles presenting a ‘serious risk to road safety’, the manufacturer of which has requested that their use be stopped immediately.

As a reminder, vehicles with Takata airbags rated “stop drive” require, because of their dangerousness, stopping the vehicle until the airbag has been replaced.

The changes provided for by the decree of 8 December 2025 will make it possible in particular to identify the vehicles still in circulation.

If your vehicle is still equipped with a Takata airbag rated “stop drive”, and only in this case:

  • it will be placed automatically in counter-visit ;
  • the roadworthiness test can only be validated after repair by a trademark mechanic;
  • the vehicle will not be able to circulate until the repair has been carried out.

This back-inspection procedure already exists when serious defects are detected on the vehicle (relating to braking, mirrors or stop lamps, for example).

Please note

The decree also specifies the rules for vehicles concerned by “serious” recall campaigns but other than Takata airbags: if the vehicle is concerned by a recall, the technical inspection report must mention it and the user is invited to contact the garage or dealer of the vehicle brand to make the necessary repairs.

Reminder

Without waiting for the technical inspection, you can know if your vehicle is affected with the list of brands affected by the recall of defective airbags updated regularly by manufacturers.
