Airbags Takata: where are we?

Publié le 16 septembre 2025 - Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

You may be concerned about replacing a defective airbag. The Order of 5 September 2025 imposes restrictive measures concerning the time limits for dealers to take over. Here is the information you need to know.

In order to speed up the procedures for changing airbags, the government imposed restrictions in a decree of 5 September 2025.

Here's what you need to know if you are concerned about installing a new airbag.

  1. If the replacement cannot be done immediately:
    • the trader must register on the same day vehicle information and customer details in the national tracking system;
    • this can only be done with the customer's consent.
  2. Within 3 days of this registration:
    • the manufacturer (or his representative) must offer at least one appointment to replace the airbags free of charge;
    • this appointment must be within 2 months maximum from the date of registration.
  3. If the proposed appointment is more than 15 days from the date of registration of the vehicle, the manufacturer must offer immediately and free of charge :
    • a courtesy vehicle or any alternative means of transport;
    • or the full financing of a rental vehicle or other transportation solution.
  4. If these deadlines are not respected: a fine of €1,000 per day of delay and per vehicle may be applied.

Reminder

To check if you are one of the motorists affected by Takata airbag problems, bring your vehicle identification number (VIN). The VIN is a unique 17-character number starting with 3 letters. You can find your VIN number:

  • on your {dot over (B)} next to the letter E;
  • on the driver side dashboard;
  • on your maintenance/warranty book or on the manufacturer plate on the windshield.

Then go to your car manufacturer's website. All brands have a dedicated platform to check if a car is affected by this recall. Fill in the “Fill in your WINE” field and you will know instantly if your vehicle is recalled.

Please note

The list of brands affected by the recall of defective airbags is available on the website of the Ministries of Spatial Planning and Ecological Transition and regularly updated by builders.
