What consequences if the mailing address indicated on your {circumflex over (x)} is not correct?

When you move, you have one month to change the address on the page of your vehicle, under penalty of a fine. The address on this document allows a car manufacturer to contact you if your vehicle poses a risk to your safety and that of others. Road Safety has just launched an information campaign to invite you to check the accuracy of the information on the safety of your vehicle.

When car manufacturers have to alert all owners of a vehicle presenting a safety risk, they rely in particular on the addresses recorded in the vehicle registration system; this file is used for the management of registration certificates (documents also known as “registration cards”).

This procedure has been implemented in particular during recent recall campaigns of vehicles equipped with potentially defective Takata airbags. Some persons, owners of a vehicle affected by this recall, could not be notified directly by mail because the car manufacturers were not aware of their latest address.

When you move, it is imperative that you change the address indicated on the page of your vehicle, within one month. If the declaration of change of domicile is not made on time, you incur a fixed fine of €135.

The Department of Road Safety has just launched an information campaign to invite all owners of a vehicle to check the accuracy of the information indicated on their {circumflex over (B)} and to update the postal address indicated on it, if necessary. If it contains a simple spelling error or an error in the name of the channel, this may be enough to prevent the correct reception of the letters sent to you.

Please note

If the address on your vehicle's certificate of registration is incorrect, you may not receive the ticket notices that are sent to you; this results in an increase in fines for failure to pay within the time limit. In fineHowever, the Treasury may initiate amicable or judicial proceedings to obtain settlement of the sums due.

How to update the address indicated on the page of your vehicle?

To update the address on your vehicle's registration certificate, you must go to the site ants.gouv.fr. You must then in order:

  • login to your personal space (via an ANTS account, France Connect or the France Identité application);
  • click on “registration”, then select the option “change the address of your”;
  • fill in the requested information (the registration number of the vehicle, your new address complete with any supplements such as the floor of your home) and specify if you are in possession of the {circumflex over (if not, you must make a request for a duplicate);
  • validate the process (you must check the information entered in the process summary).

Only the holder of the registration certificate is authorized to make the request for a change of address. This approach is free of charge except :

  • if it's 4e change of address on the registration certificate of your vehicle (in this case, you must pay € 2.76 for the process);
  • if you have an old license plate, in the format “123 AB 01” (in this case, you have to pay € 2.76 for the process).

Please note

If you do not have the necessary computer equipment and / or if you have difficulties with the internet, “digital points” (with computers, printers and scanners) are available in each prefecture and in most sub-prefectures.
