A name change results in the invalidity of identity documents

The modification of a person's civil status, which follows a procedure of change of name and/or first name, leads to the invalidation of his identity documents. An information campaign by the Ministry of the Interior informs users. It is intended for all persons who have made a change of marital status, whether they have already renewed their identity documents or not. Public Service inform you.

The national identity card or passport of a user whose civil status has been changed following a procedure for changing his name and/or forename shall be invalidated within 3 months of updating his birth certificate. This measure follows a decree of July 5, 2024.

During the name change procedures, the user is informed of the deadline after which his identity documents will be invalidated: this information is mentioned on the Cerfa forms allowing to make the requests and is also recalled during the steps in the town hall. The user is also likely to receive a reminder of the information by SMS, email or mail.

For name changes made before July 6, 2024 (date of entry into force of the decree), the deadline of 3 months runs from the date on which the user has been informed of the impending invalidation of his identity documents.

This invalidation of identity documents aims to prevent the risk of fraudulent use of an old identity, which would be distinct from the new civil status of the user.
