Election of parents' representatives on 10 and 11 October 2025

Publié le 16 septembre 2025 - Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

In schools, colleges, high schools or special education institutions, each year parents of pupils are invited to elect those who will represent them on school boards. For the 2025-2026 school year, these elections are held on Friday, October 10 or Saturday, October 11, 2025 in most of the country.

Parents of pupils are full members of the educational community, according to the Education Code. For example, elections for parents' representatives are a highlight of the school year, settling a genuine link between families and the school, and initiating a relationship of trust between members of the educational community. These representatives are responsible, in particular, for facilitating relations between parents of pupils and school staff; they may intervene with the school director to raise a particular problem, or to mediate at the request of the parents concerned.

Every year, the elections of representatives of parents of pupils take place before the end of the 7e week of the school year in all schools (primary, middle and high schools, special education institutions). In 2025, they will be held:

  • Friday, October 10 or Saturday, October 11 ;
  • Friday, October 3 or Saturday, October 4 at the establishments of Reunion and Mayotte, taking into account the school calendar of these two academies.

Polling day is chosen from these two dates:

  • by the electoral commission in primary schools (kindergartens and elementary schools);
  • by the head of the secondary school (middle and high schools).

The choice of polling day is made in agreement with the parents' associations present or represented in the school.

Who can be a parent representative?

If you wish to become a parent representative, you must:

  • exercise parental authority on a child attending school in the institution where the elections are held;
  • be on a list at least 2 candidates (parents' representatives are elected by ballot).

Each list of candidates must be sent at least 10 days before the elections:

  • at the election office, if it is a primary school;
  • to the head of the school, if it is a college or high school.

Once elected, representatives of parents of students can take part in the life of the school. As such, they are present at the various councils and are in contact with members of the educational community.

Who can vote?

In order to vote, you must exercise parental authority over the child in school (it is not mandatory to have French nationality).

Both parents are electors and eligible, and have only one vote regardless of the number of their children enrolled in the same institution.

You can vote:

  • by going to the polling station settled in the school;
  • by sending your vote by mail in a closed envelope or by having it deposited by your child in the school;
  • electronically on the internet.

Please note

In high schools of general and technological education as well as in vocational high schools, the elections of representatives of parents of pupils close the school democracy week. This campaign aims to raise awareness of the stakes and importance of these elections; during this week, elections are also organized for student representatives to the councils of delegates for high school life (CVL).
