Verified 12 November 2025 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
By which courts is the justice of the European Union (EU) ? Three courts ensure compliance with European law by its member states: the General Court of the European Union, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The Court of Justice of the European Union and the ECJ are dependent on the European Union, while the ECHR is dependent on the Council of Europe.
General Court of the European Union
The main task of the General Court of the European Union is to settle disputes between individuals, companies and the European institutions. It also settles professional disputes between a European official and the European institution for which he works (e.g. a member of the European Commission).
