Can a voter request his or her removal from the electoral roll?

If you are French, you cannot not ask for your removal from the electoral rolls, because registration is mandatory in France. On the other hand, you can be automatically delisted in certain situationsin particular, if you apply to be registered on another list of electors (for example, that of another town hall...).)

If you are a citizen European (from a country other than France), you can ask to be removed from the French electoral rolls.

You are on the list of a town hall

The rules differ depending on your nationality:

You are a French citizen

If you are registered on the list of electors of a town hall, you cannot voluntarily request your cancelation, because registration on the lists of electors is mandatory.

However, you can be automatically delisted in each of the following situations :

  • You ask to be registered on the electoral list of another town hall (automatic cancelation of the oldest registration)
  • You are applying to be registered on a consular list of electors
  • You lose the right to vote
  • On your death.
You are a European citizen (other than French)

If you are a european citizen residing in France, you can apply for your registration on the electoral roll to vote in France in municipal and European elections.

Then the rules vary depending on the situation:

Change of municipality in France

Your registration on the electoral list of a new municipality automatically results in the deletion of your previous registration.

Wish to vote in a municipal election in another state of the

If you are a citizen of a Member State of the European Union residing in France, you may be registered on a supplementary voters list to participate in municipal elections in France.

You may also participate, as an elector or candidate, in a municipal election in another state of the without having to be removed from the French electoral rolls.

Wish to no longer vote in France for the European elections

If you are registered on a supplementary voters list in France to vote in the European elections, you must ask to be removed from the list.

Asking the town hall for your dismissal is essential to be able to vote in the European elections in another country of the (UE).

You can apply for deregistration throughout the year, but if you want to be deregistered in the run-up to the next European elections, you must apply by the 6the friday before 1er round of the election.

You are on a consular list

If you are registered on a consular electoral list, but you want to vote in France in a future election (regional, departmental, communal), you must apply to be registered on the electoral list of a town hall.

This new registration automatically removes your registration from the consular voters list. A French citizen residing abroad cannot be registered simultaneously on a communal electoral list and on a consular electoral list.

Warning  

If you return to live in France, you must apply to be registered on the electoral list of a town hall. This new registration will delete your previous registration on the consular electoral list. If you are still registered for register of French nationals established outside France, you must report your departure to the consulate or embassy and request to be removed from the register.
