Classic bike

The classic bike, without electric assistance, is a bike that has no motor and that advances only by pedaling.

The bicycle without electric assistance is not not submitted the insurance obligation. So you can ride this type of bike without taking out liability insurance.

But if you cause an accident while riding your bike without electric assistance and you have no insurance civil liability, you will have to personally assume the compensation for the damage caused to others.

He is highly recommended have liability insurance (often included in insurance) multi-risk housing) to be covered in the event of damage to others.

It is necessary to check if your home insurance explicitly includes coverage for cycling.

If not, you can subscribe to a specific contract.

FYI

You can also take out additional guarantees such as accident of life guarantee, theft, legal protection, damage to your own bike,...).

Assisted Pedaling Bike (ATV)

The pedal-assisted bicycle (PEV) is equipped with an auxiliary electric motor with a maximum continuous rated power of 0.25 kilowatt (250 watts). The power supply to the motor is gradually reduced and finally interrupted when the bicycle reaches a speed of 25 km/h, or earlier if the cyclist stops pedaling.

The engine of the VAE therefore only works if you pedal. When you reach 25 km/h, the assistance stops.

The VAE belongs to the category of cycles. It is therefore not not submitted the insurance obligation. You can therefore travel with an eBike without taking out liability insurance.

But if you cause an accident while driving your eBike and you have no insurance civil liability, you will have to personally assume the compensation for the damage caused to others.

He is highly recommended have liability insurance (often included in insurance) multi-risk housing) to be covered in the event of damage to others.

It is necessary to check if your home insurance explicitly includes travel coverage to VAE.

If not, you can subscribe to a specific contract.

Electric bike

The electric bike, also called speedbike, is a bicycle equipped with an electric motor.

The electric bike belongs to the category of mopeds. It is therefore subject to theobligation to insure against civil liability.

This insurance is used to repair the damage you may cause to others while riding your electric bike.

The insurer may require certain technical conditions (registration, lighting, safety equipment) before agreeing to guarantee your electric bike.

You can also take out additional guarantees such as accident of life guarantee, theft, legal protection, damage to your own bike,...).

Electric Scooter

The electric scooter is legally considered a motorized personal mobility device (MPDD).

It is similar to a land motor vehicle. Civil liability insurance is therefore mandatory, even if the maximum speed is limited to 25 km/h.

This insurance covers damages that you may cause to third parties when using the scooter.

Your home insurance does not always automatically cover this type of machine.

If this is not provided for in your contract, you must take out an extended warranty or specific EDPM insurance.

The insurer may require certain technical conditions (lighting, conformity, clamping, etc.) before agreeing to guarantee your electric scooter.

If the maximum speed exceeds 25 km/h or if the machine is modified (unbridled), it is reclassified as a moped: you must then comply with additional obligations (registration, motorized two-wheel insurance, wearing of the helmet...).

FYI

In the event of an accident without an identified person responsible (for example a fall alone), property damage (scooter, helmet, etc.) is covered only if you have taken out personal insurance covering these risks (for example: damage insurance, life accident insurance, or extension of home insurance).

You can also take out additional guarantees: material damage, warranty theft, warranty accidents of life or legal protection.
