Transition from school to college (from CM2 to 6th grade)
Verified 20 October 2025 - Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Your child is at CM2 and you are wondering about his going to 6e ? At the end of the CM2 class, the council of teachers decides on the continuation of your child's education: passage in 6e in college or, exceptionally, repetition. Here is the information to know about the transition from school to college.
Step-by-step approach
You must complete the registration file in 6e of your child.
This document is given to him in CM2, before the spring holidays, by his teacher or the school principal.
In particular, you must indicate your choices on the following subjects:
- Diet of the student (day school, half board, boarding school)
- 1re foreign language from a choice of languages taught in 6e
- Optional Options (e.g. regional language or culture)
If the college offers it, you must also specify whether you want your child to join a class of 6e fitted out. This is a class offering a 2nde early living language, a school sports section or arranged schedules.
The completed file must be given to the teacher.
Then the teacher will send it to the Dasen: titleContent.
FYI
A student with a disability may also be guided by the CDAPH.
At the end of 3e quarter, the council of masters meets.
The board is composed of the principal and the teachers of the class.
It shall take one of the following policy decisions:
- Passage of your child in middle school
- Repetition. It can be pronounced when a pedagogical support device has not made it possible to put an end to the significant learning difficulties of a student.
The CM1 student, for whom a class jump has been decided, is also concerned.
The principal of the school you notified the decision on your child's school booklet.
If you are in disagreement with the board's decision, you have 15 calendar days (from the receipt of the decision) for appeal.
To do this, you must submit an application written, through the school principal, before the departmental appeal committee.
This committee shall be chaired by the Dasen: titleContent. It includes inspectors responsible for the constituencies of 1er degree, principals, teachers of 1er degree and parents of students. It must also be composed of at least one school psychologist, a doctor of the National Education, a principal of college and a teacher of the 2nd teaching degree in college.
You can ask to be heard by this committee.
The board can decide whether your child should move to the next grade or jump to the next grade.
In case of disagreement with the decision of the appeal board, you can refer the Ombudsman for National Education.
The steps differ depending on whether your child goes to 6e or duplicate.
Passage to 6th
You receive a notification of assignment in the sector college. You must then carry out the steps enrollment in the college.
Repetition
Your child is re-enrolled in the school he or she attended.
The repetition is accompanied by specific pedagogical measures for the student (for example, a personalized educational success program).
