Currently, if you are not registered to vote and wish to vote, your application for registration must be made:

  • no later than 6e Friday before the election, if you are traveling to the town hall;
  • no later than 6e Wednesday before the election if you do the online procedure.

From 1er july 2026, the rules are unified, as foreseen a decree of 12 june 2026.

Whether you apply in town hall or online, the deadline for registration will now be the same: on 6e friday before the election.

This measure aims to facilitate the management of electoral lists for municipalities.

FYI

The decree of 12 June 2026 makes further amendments to the Electoral Code. It makes it possible to implement a provision provided for by the Act of 13 June 2024 to protect persons with a protection order issued by the family court judge. It implements « the concealment of the address of persons who are the beneficiaries of a protection order or an immediate protection order when communicating the lists of electors ». The address of the person concerned will now have to be « hidden » in the electoral list that can be communicated to a third party. As a reminder, the electoral code makes it possible to communicate the list of electors to any elector.

The address masking information must be included in the Single Electoral Directory (REU) of personal data managed by the Insee (French national institute of statistics and economic studies). The data collected for the REU will now also include decisions to disenfranchise.
