Transfer of money

Will bank transfers be temporarily blocked at the end of the month?

Traditional interbank transfers (when the person making the transfer and the person receiving it do not have their account in the same bank) will not be executed for several days from Christmas. You will be able to make transfers of this type, but the transfer of money will not be effective until December 29. Other types of bank transfers will, however, work normally during this period.

Every weekend, as well as on certain public holidays, the payment settlement systems operated by the European Central Bank are closed. This will notably be the case on Thursday 25 December, as well as on Friday 26 December (this is the “boxing day”, a public holiday celebrated in several English-speaking countries).

The consequence of this closure: between Thursday 25 and Sunday 28 December inclusive, standard transfers that you will make to accounts located in a bank other than yours will not be processed; these transfers of money will only be effective on Monday 29 December.

This only applies to standard interbank transfers. Internal transfers (where the person making the transfer and the person receiving it have their account in the same bank) operate during periods when payment settlement systems are closed. Similarly, instant transfer services remain operational during these periods, remaining accessible 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Since January 9, 2025, instant transfers are free at all french banks.

Please note

In 2026, according to the timetable published by the French Banking Organization and Standardization Committee, standard interbank transfers will not be processed, in addition to weekends, on the following holidays:

  • thursday, 1er January (New Year's Day);
  • Friday, April 3 (Good Friday);
  • Monday, April 6 (Easter Monday);
  • friday, 1er May (Labor Day);
  • and Friday, December 25 (Christmas).
