Bank rates rise in 2025

Want to understand the pricing applicable to your bank account? The Banking Tariff Observatory (OTB) has just published its 14e annual report. Public Service explain.

Bank account management fees in effect at 1er april 2025 increased by an average of 8.95%, according to the report of the Banking Tariff Observatory (OTB). About half of the banks raised their rates, while the others did not change their prices. In addition, the opposition fees on a check or checkbook remain variable depending on the institution (between 10 and 20 euros for a check, and between 15 and 30 euros for a checkbook). Only a few banks, mainly online, offer this service for free.

What fees have changed?

Here's what to remember and how it can impact your budget:

  • account maintenance fees increase by an average of 8.95%. Fees can range from 0.48 euro up to 24 euros per year depending on your bank;
  • international payment cards, depending on the type of card, increase by less than 3% (immediate debit: +2.91%; deferred debit: +2.98%);
  • the costs of setting up a mandate to SEPA direct debit increase by 16.67%, two establishments have started charging for this service;
  • an occasional bank transfer at the counter costs around €5, an increase of 4% for branch transactions.

The withdrawals moved (made at an ATM at a bank other than yours) may be charged ; however:

  • the majority of banks offer 2 to 3 free relocated withdrawals per month;
  • the cost of a relocated withdrawal is generally of the order of 1 euro.

What protection for people in financial fragility?

Individuals in a situation of financial fragility benefit from a specific cap on bank incident fees, for a maximum price of 3 euros per month (the amount is revalued annually according to the INSEE consumer price index excluding tobacco):

  • The fragile customer offer (OCF) is charged less than 12 euros per year in most establishments.
  • Incident fees are reduced, the majority of banks do not charge intervention fees or payment incident fees to OCF beneficiaries.
  • Flat-rate charges for overdrafts of less than EUR 400 have fallen by €6.42 to €6.05 on average.

Please note

In total, after observing a significant decrease in the price of the fragile customer offer in 2023, there is a stabilization of this price in 2024 and 2025, with almost all establishments charging a maximum of 12 euros per year for this offer. Incident charges for OCF customers also stabilized after a sharp decline in previous years.
