Publié le 22 août 2025 - Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

From 1er in september 2025, the conditions for selecting blood donors are changing to facilitate access to donation while ensuring the safety of recipients. This is provided for in the Order of 10 April 2025 published in the Official Journal of 23 April 2025.

To donate blood, one must:

  • be between 18 and 70 years of age;
  • be healthy and weigh at least 50 kg.

It also exists some contraindications related to medical or personal situations. These may lead to a temporary exclusion of the plasma donation or blood. From 1er in september 2025, the rules are changing and several of these contraindications are being reduced in duration. Service-Public.fr take stock.

What changes

  • Tattoos and piercings: the waiting period before being able to donate blood goes from 4 months to 2 months.
  • Invasive medical procedures: Acupuncture sessions, mesotherapy, varicose sclerosis or endoscopies with flexible instrument require only 2 months before donation, compared to 4 months before.
  • Dental implantology: interventions with bone substitutes are no longer a contraindication to donation.
  • Hemochromatosis: People with genetic hemochromatosis can now donate directly in collection as in a donation house, without having to first carry out 5 bleeding in a hospital center.

An updated medical questionnaire

The evolution of the pre-donation questionnaire follows the opinion of the High Council of Public Health of 24 October 2024. Each candidate must complete it before donating blood. This document assesses the potential risks to the recipient and ensures the quality of the blood product.

Please note

The National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) participates in the regular evaluation of the selection criteria of blood donors. As the criteria evolve, the ANSM modifies the pre-donation questionnaire accordingly. Completed by the donor before the pre-donation interview, it represents the first step in securing donations.

Reminder

One self-assessment test allows you to check if you are eligible for the donation. The EFS health staff will confirm your eligibility during the medical interview prior to donation. You can give up to 6 times a year for men and up to 4 times for women.

The French Blood Establishment offers on its website mapping of fixed and mobile collection sites. You can search by the type of donation (blood, plasma, platelets) and the period of time you are available. The contact details and opening hours of the collection sites are indicated.
