Walks in the forest: from April 15, you are obliged to keep your dog on a leash

Publié le 11 avril 2026 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

As every year, dog owners are obliged not to detach their animals outside the forest aisles, from April 15. The objective is to preserve wildlife during a period marked by the onset of mammal calving and bird nesting.

Throughout the year, you must keep your dogs under surveillance during your walks in the forest; they must not be more than 100 meters from you. Between April 15 and June 30, the regulations are stricter : you must keep your dogs on a leash when you are outside a forest driveway. In particular, the following are considered to be forest paths:

  • roads;
  • paths;
  • forest trails (long-distance or GR trails, walking trails, etc.).

This rule aims to:

  • prevent your dogs from attacking birds or other animal species;
  • encourage the repopulation of this wildlife.

Please note

If you do not comply with these regulations, you incur a fixed fine of €135.

Thanks to their highly developed flair, dogs can easily spot newborns in the forest as well as birds that nest on the ground in open spaces. Their mere presence can disturb and stress forest animals that are particularly sensitive during this period when mammals are starting to give birth; dogs would then jeopardize the reproduction of some of this wildlife.

FYI

During your walks in the forest, you should not feed the wild animals there, nor approach them. You have to just observe them in their natural habitat, without disturbing them. Failure to follow these recommendations could change their behavior and lead to an alteration of their wild instinct. Also, if you touch a young animal, its mother may abandon it, disturbed by the human smell.
