What is a mid-career medical examination for an employee?

The employer has an obligation to protect the health and safety of the employee. To check whether the employee's state of health still corresponds to the position he occupies, a mid-career medical examination must be organized. We're taking stock of the regulations.

The mid-career medical examination has for goal to strengthen the prevention of the health at work taking into account age and health status of the employee.

It consists of:

  • Establish an inventory of adaptation of the workstation with the employee's state of health, taking into account the risks to which the employee is exposed
  • Assess the risks of occupational disintegration taking into account the evolution of the employee's abilities according to his professional background, age and health status
  • Raising employee awareness the challenges of aging at work and at work prevention of occupational risks.

The mid-career medical examination applies to any employee having any of the following contracts:

The mid-career visit may be organized at the initiative of the Prevention and Occupational Health Services (OHHS) or the employer or employee.

Please note

In companies with 250 or more employees, the disability referent may participate, at the employee's request, in the exchanges organized during the visit.

The periodicity of this visit differs if branch agreement is applicable or not to the company.

General case

This visit takes place in the calendar year the employee reaches 45 years.

This examination can be organized before the age of 45 at the same time as another medical examination. In this case, the occupational physician must examine the employee in the 2 years before the year of his 45e birthday.

Branch Agreement

The branch agreement establishes the periodicity of this medical examination.

After swap with the employer and the employee, the occupational physician may propose by written the following measures:

  • Workstation layout, adaptation or transformation (for example, limiting efforts of handling, elimination of work in height, lighting of the workstation, noise).
  • Organization of working time taking into account in particular age and health status the employee (e.g. scheduling, adapted part-time).

The mid-career visit must be the subject of a certificate of visit.
