Verified 20 February 2026 - Public Service / (Prime Minister)
A curriculum vitae (CV) is a document that a candidate for a position sends to a company. Is the CV mandatory to apply for a job and what information does it need to contain? We present you the information to know.
The CV is a document that the job applicant sends to an employer.
The purpose of the CV is to present the candidate's career path (professional experience, training path, know-how and know-how in particular) to the employer with a view to their application being selected during the hiring process.
This document allows the recruiting company to assess the candidate's suitability for the position.
The sending of a CV is not mandatory to apply for a job.
The Labor Code does not define the CV.
In practice, the candidate spontaneously applies to the employer for a position in the company.
No text specifies the conditions for writing and sending the CV.
There are therefore no mandatory legal notices to be written on the CV.
However, depending on the employer's requests for information, the candidate may include the following information about him or her:
- Last name, first name, contact details (address, e-mail, telephone number(s)), age
- Career path (previous experiences or only those related to the job offer)
- Initial training (highest degree or one related to the job offer)
- Possibly an identity photograph.
The information requested from the candidate by the recruiting employer must have a direct link with the proposed position.
They are used to assess the candidate's suitability for the position.
The information mentioned on the CV is communicated freely by the candidate.
The employer is prohibited from asking the applicant to provide him with information of a discriminatory.
FYI
The candidate does not have to specify, during the recruitment procedure, his or her state of health, possible pregnancy, trade union, political or religious beliefs, for example.
The candidate must be from good faith.
The presence of false information on his CV may lead to the dismissal of the employee for misconduct (simple or severe).
Example :
If the employer learns that the candidate has deliberately mentioned false information on his CV before his hiring as an employee in the company (concerning his professional experience or his diplomas, for example), he can then dismiss the employee for gross misconduct.
The employer is entitled to verify the candidate's credentials.
The employer may inquire from previous employers about the reality of the information specified by the candidate.
The candidate can certify his professional experience with the information available to the Cnav: titleContent.
The candidate can validate the experiences he or she wishes to certify and forward them to the employer, who can then verify the accuracy of the information about the candidate's career.
To do this, the candidate must log in to his personal space on the Pension Insurance website:
Please note
To obtain a certificate of professional career, the candidate must have at least 55 years.
The company is not obliged to review the CV anonymously.
The company may keep the CV in a database provided that the database is declared to the Cnil: titleContent.
The employer is free to reject an application on the basis of the CV submitted, unless the rejection is motivated by discriminatory reasons.
