Public holidays are non-working days when service requirements allow it.
Some public services cannot interrupt their activity on public holidays (hospitals, public gardens,...) and these days are then included in your work schedule and worked.
In general, non-working holidays are not recoverable (general case).
However, in the hospital public service (FPH), public holidays may in some cases be compensated.

General case
Public holidays cannot be recovered.
Your employer administration cannot ask you to make up for the hours not worked on a holiday.
And conversely, you can't claim an extra day off or compensation when a holiday falls on an unworked day (a Sunday for example).
If you're part-time, you can't change your schedule, either, when a holiday falls on a day when you're not working because of your part-time work.
Hospital Public Service
When a holiday coincides with a weekly rest day, you may be granted holiday compensation (in the form of a day off) if you work on variable rest, i.e. if you work at least 10 Sundays or public holidays per year.
If your weekly rest comes on fixed datesHowever, you will be compensated if your weekly rest periods do not include Saturday and Sunday simultaneously. In this case, compensation is granted when the public holiday coincides with the working day.
On the other hand, no compensation is granted if your weekly rest comes on fixed dates on Saturdays and Sundays.
In a service where statutory holidays are usually not worked, you do not have to take a day off on the statutory holiday included in a vacation period.
Example :
If you work Monday to Friday, you do not have to take 1 day off for Tuesday, November 11, 2025 if you are on leave that week.
Conversely, in a service where statutory holidays are usually worked (e.g. in hospital wards), you must take a day off on the statutory holiday included in a vacation period.
Example :
If you work in a department where July 14 is usually worked and is on your work schedule, you must take a day off if you wish to be absent on that day.
A public holiday usually not worked is paid as a regular working day.
A public holiday usually worked shall be remunerated either under the usual conditions or with an increase, depending on the administration.
Example :
Staff of the decentralized services of the prison administration are entitled to a lump sum allowance when they work on a public holiday.
The same is true of hospital workers.
In some body or framework of jobsHowever, it is sometimes possible to receive bonuses for work on public holidays.
Example :
Staff members in the employment framework of territorial social workers who are employed as domestic helpers, life assistants or family workers may receive a lump sum allowance when they work on a public holiday.
