Is a locker room mandatory in the company?

Verified 05 December 2025 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

The employer must make available to workers the means to ensure their individual cleanliness, including toilets and sinks.

The obligation to set up a locker room in the company differs depending on whether employees wear specific workwear or PPE: titleContent or wear not.

Specific clothing or PPE

The employer must put collective changing rooms available to its employees in companies where employees wear specific work clothing or PPE. For example, a uniform, a work suit, goggles or a helmet.

This obligation is applicable in companies regardless of their activity or the number of employees.

The collective locker rooms are settled in a isolated premises working and storage rooms. They are located close to the places where workers pass (hall, corridors).

Separate facilities are provided for women and men in institutions with mixed staff.

The collective locker rooms are equipped with a sufficient number of seats and individual cabinets. These cabinets are non-flammable and equipped with a lock or padlock. They allow to hang 2 city clothes.

The floors and walls of the premises assigned to the collective changing rooms are such that they allow effective cleaning.

The employer shall ensure that the changing rooms are kept in a constant state of cleanliness.

Other case

Some workers are not required to wear specific work clothes or personal protective equipment.

The employer can then replace the collective locker rooms with a secure storage unit, dedicated to their personal effects, placed close to their workstation (for example, a locker room with a padlock).
