What is a Young Firefighter (JSP)?

Are you between 11 and 18 years old and interested in emergency services? Becoming a young firefighter (JSP) allows you to initiate yourself in the company of professional, military or volunteer firefighters. Registration is done in the spring or at the beginning of the school year, depending on your department. Here is the information you need to know.

The activities offered at the JSP are:

  • Introduction to fire-fighting techniques
  • Training in first aid
  • Practice of different sports
  • Introduction to the maintenance of specialized vehicles
  • Participation in maneuvers, ceremonies and competitions
  • Citizen engagement.

These activities take place throughout the school year, often on Wednesdays and/or Saturdays.

As a JSP, you benefit from a specific outfit, adapted according to the activities (sports outfit, protective helmet, braid etc.).

The commitment as a young firefighter is recognized if you want to become a volunteer firefighter.

The conditions depend on your situation:

You live in Paris or in a commune of departments 92, 93 and 94

To become a JSP, you must complete strict age requirements. For example, being born between the 1er January 2011 and 1er June 2012 for the 2026-2029 cycle.

You must be from french nationality.

You must reside in one of the following departments:

  • Paris (75)
  • France (92)
  • Saint-Denis (93)
  • Val-de-Marne (94).

You must be physically fit JSP missions (demanding sporting practice, carrying heavy loads, etc.).

Your criminal record must be a virgin.

You live in Marseille

To become a young firefighter, you must be marseilles.

You must be 14 years minimum or 15 years the year of your engagement.

You must be physically fit (medical certificate) and swimming skills.

You live in another municipality

To become a JSP, you must have between 11 and 18 years old (age may vary by department).

There is no nationality requirement.

You must be physically fit (medical certificate).

Registration is done in the spring or at the beginning of the school year, depending on your department.

You must submit your application online, together with all your supporting documents, using the following online service:

You must provide the following documents:

  • Authorization of parents (or legal representatives)
  • Medical Certificate of Physical Fitness
  • Swimming certificate
  • Letter of motivation
  • Criminal record virgin.

If your application is selected, your application will be evaluated in the following tests:

  • Written tests (level 6)e)
  • Sports events
  • Individual interview.

The training of young firefighters in Paris takes place on three school years (Saturday afternoon)

You prepare the National Young Firefighter Certificate (BNJSP).

An annual fee (€195) is to be paid at the beginning of the school year.

You live in Marseille

For your registration, you must contact the battalion of firefighters of Marseille by email.

Who shall I contact

You must provide the following supporting documents:

  • Letter of motivation
  • Mini curriculum vitae
  • Photo ID
  • Copy of school report cards from the last 2 years
  • Medical certificate of non-contraindication to sporting practice (for recruitment tests)
  • Copy of swimming certificate (50 m freestyle).

If your application is successful, your application will be evaluated in the following tests:

  • Written test (level 5)e)
  • Sports event
  • Individual interview (15 minutes maximum).

If you are selected, you will follow a training program of 3 school years(half a day per week, Wednesday or Saturday).

Registration fees (€150) are to be paid each year.

You live in another municipality

Registration is done at the beginning of the school year.

You must inquire with the SDIS: titleContent of your department to know the process to be accomplished and the documents to be provided.

Who shall I contact

You must provide the following:

  • Medical certificate attesting to the absence of contraindications to the practice of sport
  • Certificate of Tetanus Vaccination
  • Parental authorization.

You follow 4 training cycles, usually on Wednesdays or Saturdays.

At the end of the training, you can get the  national patent for young firefighter (BNJSP).

You must pass the following tests:

  • Written tests
  • Practical tests
  • Sporting events (aquatic, sports course, etc.).

You can take the BNJSP tests in thecalendar year from the age of 16 until the 31st of December of the year of your 18th birthday.

FYI  

The training of young firefighters is modeled on that of the volunteer firefighter team member. This allows you to become Volunteer firefighter (VPD) without redoing all the training modules at the time of your recruitment.
