Do we have to have an identity card?

No, there is no text that requires you to have an identity card.

Nevertheless, if you are subject to a identity check, the procedure will be longer if you cannot present an identity document.

In addition, for most of the procedures, you have to prove your identity. So if you don't have an identity card, you may have a hard time. These include, for example:

  • Examination or competition
  • Registration at France Travail (formerly Job center)
  • Registration and voting in elections
  • Banking transactions (payment by check, withdrawal at your bank counter)
  • Travel abroad.

The identity card, just like the passport, allows you to prove your identity, but also your French nationality.
