Do you have questions related to sperm donation? If you are between the ages of 18 and 44, you have the option of donating your sperm. It doesn't matter if you have children or not. This donation is intended for couples composed of a man and a woman or 2 women. This donation can also benefit an unmarried woman. Donation is voluntary, free and anonymous. We explain the rules to know.

General scenario

You must meet the following 2 conditions:

  • Between 18 and 44 years old inclusive
  • Be healthy. Medical examinations are carried out before donation.

Please note

One emancipated minor cannot be a donor.

The doctor talks to you and then gets your approval.

Maintenance

One or more pre-donation interviews are organized between the medical team and you.

During this interview, the doctor collects your identity.

In addition, the doctor collects some of your non-identifiable data:

  • Age
  • General condition at the time of donation
  • Physical characteristics
  • Family and professional situation
  • Country of birth
  • Written reasons for this donation.

Identity and non-identifiable data are collected in a consent form. You date and sign this form.

This consent is free and can be withdrawn at any time, until use of gametes.

During the preliminary interview, the doctor checks that you meet the conditions for making this donation.

The prior interview also allows you to be informed:

  • Regulations and in particular the impossibility for recipients and third-party donors to know their respective identities
  • The consequences of this gift in relation to filiation. No legal affiliation can be established between the person who donated semen and you
  • Rules related to access for persons designed by AMP: titleContent with a third party donor to your non-identifying data and your identity and the need to consent to the communication of this data to make the donation
  • That the anonymous medical record (including your medical history, the number of children donated, the date of the samples and your written consent) will be kept for a minimum of 40 years.

Collection of consent

After the interviews, the medical team collects your written consent.

You must give your consent, for each donation, to the transmission:

  • Your non-identifying data (examples: age, physical character)
  • Of your identity.

Please note

Since March 31, 2025, an AMP can no longer be performed with gametes for which the donor has not granted the transmission of his identity or non-identifying data.

The form collecting your consent to the disclosure of your identity and non-identifying data is stored by the health institution where you make your donation.

This consent is free and can be withdrawn at any time, until use of gametes.

In case of a new donation (example: you have already made a donation last year), it is necessary to redo the steps, because your health check could evolve and the selection criteria also (infectious, genetic).

The process is carried out within a donation center.

You can:

  • Choose the center closest to you
  • Validate the online form to request an appointment
  • Be contacted by the center to begin the process of donation.

The collection of spermatozoa is carried out by masturbation.

A 1er sampling allows semen to be studied, in particular the resistance of spermatozoa to freezing.

The results of the 1er sampling makes it possible to determine the number of subsequent collections to be carried out.

A microbiological examination can determine whether the donation can be retained.

If this is the case, the spermatozoa are frozen and then stored in the laboratory until they are allocated to recipients, for medical assistance for procreation (PMA).

No. It is not possible to make a donation to a member of your entourage. The donor cannot choose to whom his donation will be allocated.

No, sperm donation is not remunerated.

The medical costs of the donation are fully covered by the Health Insurance.

Non-medical expenses (accommodation, transport...) can be covered by the hospital on presentation of the supporting documents.

Donation made before September 1, 2022

Please note

When the donation was made before 1er September 2022, your identity and your non-identifying data are not communicated to the persons from this donation who have made an access request. Your consent is required.

However, you can voluntarily give this consent to the disclosure of your identity and non-identifying data by contacting the Commission for Access to Persons Born of Assisted Reproduction (CAPADD).
